Kings, Lakes Claim VB Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
– Calumet swept Ishpeming 3-0 (
25-10, 25-17, 25-6). Molly Larson had 11 kills, and Cami Johnson had 13 digs.
– Hancock v Negaunee – no report.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Chassell 3-1 (
25-22, 20-25, 25-10, 27-5).
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Ontonagon
3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 18-25, 20-25). Lexie Turner led the BlueBolts with 11 kills.
– L’Anse lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-1 (
26-24, 25-17, 25-11, 25-16). Natalie Swanson had nine kills and Brynn VanBuren had 24 assists. .
– Baraga v Ewen-Trout Creek – no report.

In volleyball today, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Jeffers.

The Houghton girls cross country team took the title at the Westwood Invitational at the Wawanowin Country Club yesterday. Gremlins Ingrid Seagren, Maria Velat and Autumn Eles came in fourth, sixth and ninth. Calumet finished fourth in the team competition.

The Gremlins boys team placed second to Ishpeming. Joe Wood, Branden Peterson and Jake Sullivan took second, fourth and ninth positions. Calumet finished fifth.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team entertains Northland College this afternoon at 4:00.

The Lions men’s soccer team plays at Bluffton University in Ohio this afternoon.

Finlandia volleyball player Braedyn Hurd has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week. Hurd had 11 digs in the Lions’ recent game against Maranatha Baptist..

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers’ season ended with a 4-3 loss to the Washington Nationals in the National League Wild Card play-in game last night. Milwaukee took a quick lead, with a two-run Yasmani Grandal homer in the first inning, and a solo shot by Eric Thames in the second. They held the lead until the eighth inning, when Juan Soto’s bases-loaded single to right field off Josh Hader was misplayed by Trent Grisham. The error allowed three runs to score, including the game-winner.

The Nationals move on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers. The American League Wild Card Game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Oakland Athletics will be played tonight.

NHL

Dylan Larkin’s status for the Detroit Red Wings’ opening game Saturday is in question. Larkin left the ice after a collision during practice yesterday. He’ll be evaluated today.

Running

The Arnold Air Society is hosting its annual 5k Bridge Run this Saturday at 10:00. The run raises awareness about POW/MIA issues. Proceeds will go to the Hubbell VFW to help local veterans. The 5k will start at 10:00. Registration is $20 per person. On-site registration can be done at the MTU ROTC Gym before the race begins. Online registration can be completed here.

Our high school football coverage continues with three games this weekend. On Friday, Hancock hosts Westwood on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com. Houghton plays at Gogebic on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Both broadcasts will begin at 6:40. On Saturday, we’ll provide bonus streamed coverage of the West Iron County at Lake Linden-Hubbell contest. The pregame show will start at 1:10 exclusively at KBear102.com. 

The Finlandia University football team entertains Olivet College Saturday. Pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.
