Kings, Panthers Win Volleyball Semis – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In the high school volleyball tournament last night…
– In the Class C semifinals, Calumet earned a 3-1 (25-12, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20) victory over Houghton. Leah Bjorn led the Copper Kings offense with 14 kills, and Amber Johnson had 35 digs. Chassell eliminated Hancock 3-1. The Kings and Panthers will meet for the district title tonight at 7:00 at Calumet.
– The Class D District title will be decided tonight, when Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Lake Linden-Hubbell play at 7:00 at Dollar Bay.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team opens its season with home games tomorrow against 15th-ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering, and Saturday against 22nd-ranked Concordia-Wisconsin. Coach Joe Burcar is rebuilding the Lions program using plenty of local talent. Area players on the Finlandia roster include Dylan Farmer from Calumet… Danny Hill, Cam Murray and Devyn LaCourt from Hancock… Cale Markham and Marcus Gloss from Houghton… and Kirk Hillstrom from Jeffers. At each men’s home game this year, one fan will win prizes from Coca Cola of Hancock, and have a chance to make a shot to win free Coke products for a year. At all men’s and women’s games, a Finlandia student will be able to take a shot to win a $250.00 gift certificate from Northwind Books. Saturday’s game against Concordia will be broadcast on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team begins its schedule with an exhibition match tonight at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Huskies hockey player Mark Auk has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Month. Auk scored two goals and added seven assists in October. He blocked 12 shots, and was named the MVP of the season-opening Ice Breaker Tournament.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Ottawa tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Milwaukee Bucks tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
The Houston Astros won their first World Series title last night, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in game seven of the fall classic.  The Astros took control early, with two runs in the first and three in the second off L-A starter Yu Darvish. George Springer was named the series’ Most Valuable Player.

NFL
