Kings Stifle Mountaineers – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
• Calumet shut down Iron Mountain 21-6. The Copper Kings held the Mountaineers without a first down in the first half, as they built a 14-0 halftime lead. Dryden Nelson and Kip Kangas ran for touchdowns, and Nolan Sturos caught a TD pass from Hans Kiilunen, who was filling in at quarterback for the injured Paul Sturos. The Copper Kings improve to 4-2, and will play at Houghton next Saturday. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Houghton’s game against West Iron County was canceled because the Wykons didn’t have enough players. The Gremlins are credited with a 1-0 forfeit win.
• Hancock fell to Westwood 36-6.
• L’Anse lost to Negaunee 42-0.
• Ontonagon got past Norway 28-20.

• Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Stephenson in the Lakes’ homecoming game. Coverage will start at 1:10 on KBear 102.3.

• Houghton competes at the Wrightstown Invitational.

College Volleyball

The Finlandia volleyball team won both of its games at the Sisu Classic yesterday. In the opening match, the Lions dropped the first set to Mount Mary, then came back to earn a 3-1 (21-25, 25-13,25-16, 25-12) victory. In their second match, Finlandia swept Great Lakes Christian 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-9). Mount Mary blanked Great Lakes Christian 3-0 in yesterday’s other contest. The Lions will conclude the Classic with another game against Great Lakes Christian this morning at 11:00, in what will be their final home match of the season.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team won its fifth straight match, downing Wayne State 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23) last night. The win moved Tech into first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Huskies host Saginaw Valley State today at 4:00.

College Soccer

The Tech soccer team blanked Purdue Northwest 3-0 last evening. Stephanie Yeager and Emily Zeitunian scored in the first half, and Allison Thelen added an insurance tally in the second half. The Huskies will host Northern Michigan tomorrow at noon.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team plays at Wisconsin Lutheran tomorrow.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team has the weekend off.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team entertains Davenport University in the Huskies’ homecoming game today at 1:00.

The NMU football team entertains Wayne State.

The Finlandia football team plays at the University of Northwestern in Saint Paul today.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Northern Michigan in an exhibition match this evening at 7:07.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 8-1 to the Chicago White Sox last night. Wily Peralta took the loss, giving up five runs on nine hits over six innings.

The Tigers continue their final series of the season tonight in Chicago. Matt Manning will start against Lucas Giolito. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and dropped an 8-6 decision to the Los Angeles Dodgers last night. Starter Eric Lauer served up two home runs to Trea Turner – a solo shot in the first inning, and a two-out grand slam in the fifth.

The Brewers continue that series in Los Angeles tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Julio Urías.

Reliever Hunter Strickland returned from paternity leave yesterday, and the Brewers sent pitcher Miguel Sánchez back to Nashville.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Columbus Blue Jackets in preseason play tonight. Listen for regular-season Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

The Detroit Lions visit the Chicago Bears for a 1:00 game tomorrow. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

The Green Bay Packers host the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 4:25 contest.
