The Calumet girls basketball team got off to a fast start, and defeated Tawas 46-23 in the state tournament quarterfinals last night. The Copper Kings gave the Braves an opening three-pointer, then reeled off 21 straight points to put the game away early. The Kings head to the Breslin Center in East Lansing, where they will face unbeaten Laingsburg in the semifinals tomorrow at 1:00.

In boys’ Class D action, unbeaten Lake Linden-Hubbell faces unbeaten North Central for the Regional title tonight at 7:00 at Negaunee. Our broadcast coverage begins around 6:40 on KBear 102 and KBear102.com.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team plays at the Cobber Classic in St. Paul today and tomorrow. The Lions will take on Bethany Lutheran this morning, and the University of Northwestern this afternoon.

NHL – Red Wings Idle
The Detroit Red Wings return to action tomorrow, when they visit the Panthers. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Snap Losing Streak

The Detroit Pistons broke their 10-game losing streak by beating the Grizzlies 105-95 last night. Detroit trailed by a dozen at the end of the first quarter, and by 15 at halftime, but outscored Memphis 66-41 in the second half. Reggie Jackson had 23 points and a career-best 20 assists. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 23. The Pistons play at Philadelphia tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Greg Monroe missed last night’s game after straining a knee in practice on Monday. He’s listed as “questionable” for tonight’s contest.

Justin Verlander gave up four runs over four innings, as the Tigers lost to the Nationals 6-4 yesterday. The runs were the first Verlander has surrendered in spring training since 2013. Ian Kinsler homered for Detroit. The Tigers face the Pirates this evening. Shane Greene will start.

The Tigers made their first cuts of the spring yesterday, sending several pitchers to minor league camp. Luke Putkonen was one of them. He was on Detroit’s opening day roster last year, but missed most of last season with elbow problems.

Matt Garza pitched into the fourth inning, and gave up three runs, but the Brewers defeated the Padres 6-4 yesterday. Carlos Gomez hit a three-run homer. The Brewers will play the Royals this afternoon.
