Kings Win FB District; Gremlins Take VB District – Saturday Sports Wrap

Calumet claimed a district football title Friday night, edging perennial playoff rival Negaunee 6-0 in a defensive slugfest. David Kaipio’s one-yard run with 2:14 remaining in the game broke the scoreless deadlock. The Miners responded with a desperate late drive that ended at the Copper Kings’ five-yard line when a Negaunee pass was swatted to the ground in the end zone by a Calumet defender as time expired. It’s the first district title for the Copper Kings since 2006. They will host Maple City Glen Lake next weekend. The Lakers advanced with a 36-12 victory over Roscommon Friday night. Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Norway today at 1:00 in the Division Eight district title game. It will be the first meeting between these teams since at least the mid-1950s, and maybe the first ever. Our pregame coverage will start around 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Here’s how Upper Peninsula teams are faring in the playoffs…
– In Division Four, Escanaba plays at Alma this afternoon. The winner will face Grand Rapids Catholic Central, which defeated Allendale 38-7 Friday night.
– In Division Five, Menominee entertains Grayling this afternoon. The winner will take on Reed City, which beat Remus Chippewa Hills 34-28 Friday night.
– In Division Six, Calumet advanced with a 6-0 win over Negaunee Friday night. The Copper Kings will host Maple City Glen Lake, which eliminated Roscommon 36-12 Friday night.
– In Division Seven, Traverse City St. Francis pounded Iron Mountain 54-6 Friday night.
– In Division Eight, Lake Linden-Hubbell entertains Norway this afternoon. The winner will meet St. Ignace, which defeated Newberry 26-6 Friday night.
– In the Eight Player Division, North Central outscored Forest Park 60-50 Friday night. Pickford edged Engadine 30-28. The Jets and Panthers will meet in the semifinals next weekend.

Houghton-Gremlins-LogoHoughton won the Class B district volleyball title Friday night with a 3-0 victory over Menominee. The Gremlins will face Kingsley in the regional semifinal Tuesday at 6:00 at Cheboygan. Calumet will play Munising in the Class C regional semifinal Tuesday at 7:30 at Gladstone. Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Rudyard in the Class D regional semifinal Tuesday at 7:30 at Westwood.

The MTU soccer team advanced to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game by defeating Walsh 1-0 Friday.  Jaci Mielke’s goal in the 74th minute provided the winning margin. Kirsen Hudak made five saves to preserve the shutout. The Huskies will face top-seeded Grand Valley State in the championship match tomorrow at 1:00. Tech lost to the Lakers 1-0 in their regular-season meeting in September.

The Tech hockey team lost 3-2 in overtime at Michigan State Friday night. Mason Blacklock and Jake Lucchini scored for the Huskies, as they opened a 2-1 lead early in the second period. Mason Appleton scored both the tying and winning goals for the Spartans – both on power plays. Angus Redmond took the loss in goal for Tech. The Huskies skate at Michigan State again tonight.

The Tech volleyball team swept Northwood 3-0 Friday evening. The Huskies host Hillsdale this afternoon at 3:00.

The MTU football team wraps up its season at Northern Michigan University this afternoon in the annual Miner’s Cup game. Kickoff is at 1:00 at the Superior Dome.

Dominik Shine scored twice, and  Mathias Israelsson made 34 saves as the Northern Michigan University hockey team defeated the University of Wisconsin 5-2 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight in Madison.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision at Aurora University in Illinois Friday night. The Spartans scored three goals in a six-minute span in the second period to put the game away.  and tomorrow night. Thomas Clayton’s power play goals was the Lions’ only tally. The Finlandia volleyball team is in Chicago for the American Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. The Lions will face Illinois Tech and Alfred State today.

The Finlandia football team wraps up its season at home against Trinity Bible College today. Kickoff is at noon at McAfee Field.

The Calumet Wolverines opened their Great Lakes Hockey League season with a 5-4 victory over the Fox Cities Ice Dogs at the Colosseum Friday night. The Wolverines will host the Monroe Blues tonight. Faceoff will be at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against the Blues Friday night was not reported. The Pioneers will entertain the Ice Dogs tonight at 7:30 at Dee Stadium.

The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Winnipeg Jets 5-3 Friday night. Detroit led 3-2 in the third period when Brendan Tanov’s first career NHL goal tied the game. He scored the game-winner with 1:16 remaining. Petr Mrazek took the loss in net. The Wings have lost four straight, and host the Oilers tomorrow afternoon.

The Detroit Pistons entertain the Denver Nuggets tonight.

NFL
Lions-Packers FeatureThe Detroit Lions visit the Minnesota Vikings for a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Lions will again be without linebacker DeAndre Levy. Seven other players are listed as “questionable.” Check the injury report here. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Green Bay Packers host the Indianapolis Colts for a 4:25 game. The Packers say receiver Ty Montgomery will play, despite being sick this week. Check the injury report here.
