Kruse Lifts Gremlins Over Bay Port in OT – Sunday Sports Wrap

– Jacob Kruse’s goal at 1:52 of overtime was the game-winner as Houghton edged Bay Port 6-5 Saturday afternoon. Kruse’s second goal of the contest ended a match in which nine of the 11 goals were scored during power plays. Will Stier made 21 stops to get the win for the Gremlins.
– Jeffers fell to DePere 3-1 Saturday.
– The result of L’Anse’s games at the Merrill tournament were not reported.


The Michigan Tech hockey team blanked 20th-ranked Minnesota State 4-0 Saturday night. Freshman goalie Angus Redmond stopped 22 shots to earn his third career shutout. Alex Gillies scored twice for the Huskies. Tech and MSU skated to a 4-4 tie Friday night, with the Mavericks earning the bonus WCHA standings point in a shootout.


Every member of the MTU women’s basketball team saw court time as the Huskies blew past Lake Superior State 73-51 Saturday. The game was close early, with the Lakers trailing by just two points late in the second quarter. The Huskies increased the lead to nine at halftime, then outscored Lake State 36-23 in the second half. Brenna Heise led Tech with 18 points.


The MTU men’s basketball team took control midway through the first half, and overpowered Lake Superior State 86-57 Saturday. The Huskies sank a season-high 18 three-point shots. Kyle Monroe and Jordan Chartier each scored 21 for MTU.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team shut out Alaska-Anchorage 4-0 Saturday. The Wildcats cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Seawolves Friday night.

Both NMU basketball teams defeated Northwood Saturday – the women 70-50, and the men 100-79.


The Finlandia University men’s hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision at the Milwaukee School of Engineering Saturday. Bryce Mitzel’s third goal of the series was the Lions’ only score. Finlandia fell 4-3 to MSOE Friday night.


Adrian College swept the Finlandia women’s hockey team with an 8-0 victory Saturday. Sarah Gundry made a career-high 55 saves for the Lions. On Friday, the fourth-ranked Bulldogs routed the Finlandia 11-1. In the two games, the Lions were outshot 113-28.


Both Finlandia basketball teams lost to Minnesota-Morris Saturday. The the women’s game, the Cougars broke open a close contest late in the third quarter, and outscored the Lions by 14 points in the final stanza to take an 86-59 victory. Julia Daavettila scored 17 for the Finns.


The men’s game was tied 44 at halftime, but the Cougars dominated the second half, and claimed a 96-78 win. Freshman Geoff Smart had 24 points for the Lions.

Both Finlandia basketball teams lost at Crown College Friday night – the women 57-53, and the men 86-77.

The result of the Calumet Wolverines’ game against the De Pere Deacons Saturday night was not reported. The Wolverines fell to the Fond du Lac Bears 3-2 Friday night.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against Fond du Lac Saturday evening was not reported. The Pioneers host De Pere today at 1:30 at Dee Stadium.

The Detroit Red Wings host the New York Rangers this afternoon at 12:30.


Marcus Morris’ tip-in at the buzzer gave the Detroit Pistons a 113-112 victory over the Washington Wizards Saturday night. The last-second heroics salvaged a game in which the Pistons had led by 16 after three quarters. It was Detroit’s third-straight victory. Morris led the Pistons with 25 points and 11 rebounds. The Pistons host the Sacramento Kings Monday. Tipoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Green Bay Packers face the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC title game this afternoon. The New England Patriots play the Pittsburgh Steelers for the AFC Championship tomorrow evening. You’ll hear both games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. Pregame coverage starts at 2:00.
