High School
The boys high school basketball tournament opens tonight…
– In the Class C semifinals, Hancock plays at Calumet at 7:00. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. L’Anse plays at Houghton at 7:00. We’ll broadcast that game on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com
– In Class D at Dollar Bay, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City faces Chassell at 5:30, and Ontonagon takes on Jeffers at 7:30.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team split its games in Clermont, Florida, yesterday.  The Lions lost to Elizabethtown College 3-1, then blanked Catholic University 2-0. Denia Bent gave up just five hits in the shutout. Finlandia has today off.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament with a 5-4 victory over Bemidji State Saturday night.

Northern Michigan University moved into the semifinals with a 5-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville in the third game of their quarterfinal series last night.

Tech will face top-seeded Minnesota State in the semifinals. The best-of-three series will begin Friday in Mankato, with game two on Saturday, and game three on Sunday, if needed. Second-seeded NMU will host Bowling Green in the other semifinal series.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has been invited to the NCAA Division Two tournament. The Huskies finished the season with a record of 23-5. They won the GLIAC North Division title, but were upset in the opening round of the league tournament. They will be the fourth seed in the Midwest Region, and will face a familiar opponent in the opening round – fifth-seeded Grand Valley State. The game will be played Friday in Ashland, Ohio.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-1 to the Minnesota Timberwolves last night. Justin Abdelkader gave Detroit an early lead, but the Wolves scored twice in the second period and twice more in the third to put the game away. Jimmy Howard stopped 23 shots in the loss. The Wings visit the Boston Bruins tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost to the Washington Nationals 6-2 yesterday. Alex Wilson gave up three runs on five hits before leaving in the third inning. The Tigers face the New York Mets this afternoon. Listen for select preseason games and all of Detroit’s regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Cleveland Indians 6-2 yesterday. Jhoulys Chacín gave up two runs before leaving in the third inning. The Brewers have today off.

CopperDog 150
Dennis LaBoda overcame a slow start, and won his third CopperDog 150 yesterday. LaBoda turned in the fastest times in both Saturday and Sunday’s stages, after finishing seventh in Friday’s run. Defending champion Anny Malo finished second. Tristen Rivest won the CopperDog 80, with a nearly 15 minute margin over Alex LaPlante. Among local mushers, Tom Bauer placed 14th in the 150. In the 80, Jerry Trudell had a great opening run, and wound up finishing fifth. Susan Serafini placed eighth. MTU student Adam Schmidt finished 13th. Hannah Tiura, Becky Bean and Kelly Jo Engle were unable to complete the race. You can see full results here.
