Lake Linden Opens Football Season with Win – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Lake Linden-Hubbell kicked off its high school football season with a 32-14 victory at Norway yesterday. It was the Lakes’ first win over the Knights in six attempts. Lake Linden scored on its first drive, with Caleb Klein reaching the end zone on a 17-yard run. Norway responded with a 45-yard run by Isaac Hautamaki. Early in the second quarter, quarterback Brandon Lavigne ran for an eight-yard score. Late in the first half, Lavigne connected with Caleb Gregoire for a 45-yard touchdown play. The Lakes led 24-7 at the half. The teams traded touchdowns in the second half, with Ethan Sabotta ripping off a 78-yard touchdown run for the Knights, and Jesse Hill running two yards for Lake Linden’s final TD. Caleb Klein led the Lake’s ground attack with 79 yards. Norway’s rushing duo of Hautamaki and Sabotta combined for 210 yards, but 123 yards came on the two long touchdown runs. Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team earned its first win of the season yesterday, defeating Northland College 1-0. Zuleiki Wight scored the game’s only goal. The Lions outshot the Lumberjills 18-4. Samantha Linteo got the win in net.

The men’s soccer team battled Lakeland University to a 0-0 draw yesterday. Noah Raisanen made five saves.

The Lions volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-6, 25-13, 25-8) to Ripon University at the Ripon Quadrangular yesterday, then fell 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-14) to Bethany Lutheran College. Taylor Talerico was named to the All-Tournament Team.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers scored seven runs in the third inning, and held on for a 10-7 win over the Minnesota Twins last night. Ronny Rodriguez hit two home runs, and drove in five. Matthew Boyd earned the win, giving up five runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out 11, but served up four home runs.

The Tigers host the Twins again this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will start against Michael Pineda. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Chicago Cubs 2-0 yesterday. Manny Piña drove in both Milwaukee runs with a single in the first inning. Zach Davies gave up four hits, but was pulled with two outs in the fifth, and did not qualify for the win. Junior Guerra was awarded the win in relief.

That series concludes in Chicago this afternoon. Gio Gonzalez will start against Yu Darvish.

The Cardinals won twice yesterday, so Saint Louis leads the National League Central Division by 2.5 games over Chicago, with Milwaukee 6.5 games out.

NFL

When he arrived a the Green Bay Packers’ training camp this summer, DeShone Kizer proclaimed that he would be Aaron Rodgers’ successor. Now, he’s not even a Packer. Kizer was cut by the team yesterday, leaving Tim Boyle as Rodgers’ only backup. The packers also cut kicker Sam Fickens, meaning Mason Crosby will handle the duties again this season.

The Packers also ended receiver Equanimeous St. Brown’s season by putting him on injured reserve because of an ankle problem.

Josh Johnson has won the back-up quarterback job with the Detroit Lions. Johnson was signed just a couple of weeks ago, after projected backup Tom Savage suffered a concussion. Savage departs, and newly-signed rookie David Blough will be kept as as second back-up.

Cycling

At the Copper Harbor Trails Festival yesterday…
Adam Swank of Duluth win the 30-mile XC event, more than a minute ahead of Chris Lowry from LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Sam Kilpela of Atlantic Mine was third. Hanna Derby from Marquette was the top women’s finisher.
– Colin Vanderschaaf from Marquette won the 14-mile XC race. Louis Hindman of Marquette was second. Erin Vanderschaaf of Marquette was the top women’s finisher.
