Lakes and MTU Football Still Unbeaten – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school football Saturday…
Lake Linden Hubbell Logo– Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a wild 46-34 victory over Houghton. The Lakes and Gremlins played toe-to-toe through the first half, with Lake Linden leading by four points at the break. Lake Linden broke the game open with three unanswered touchdowns in the second half, then held on as Houghton scored twice to close the gap. Blake Dupuis rushed for three touchdowns for the Lakes. Brendan Middleton ran for a score, and caught a TD pass from Arthur Lyons. Stevan Suhonen ran 42 yards for a score. For the Gremlins, Jordan Reynolds threw four touchdown passes. One went to Quentin Stachowiak, who also scored late in the game when he ran 85 yards after picking up a Lake Linden fumble. Hunter Richards caught three touchdown passes, but only scored twice. He completed the third play by lateraling the ball to Sean Hyslop, who took it into the endzone.
– Baraga lost to Engadine 63-24.
– Ewen-Trout Creek pounded Superior Central 50-14.

Friday night…
– Calumet claimed the WestPAC title with a 34-14 victory over L’Anse.
– Hancock lost 28-12 at Gwinn.
– Ontonagon dropped a 74-0 decision at North Central.

The Team Copper Country U18 hockey squad lost to the Shattuck St. Mary AAA U18 team 2-1 Saturday evening. Danny Hill scored the lone goal while Dawson Kero kept Shattuck’s at bay until two minutes remained in the game when the hosts crashed the net for the go-ahead goal. Those teams play again this morning.

MTU
The Michigan Tech football team improved to 5-0 with a 30-14 Homecoming victory over Northwood Saturday. Brandon Cowie completed 21 of 30 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for a score. John Williams rushed for 99 yards, and Kevin Miller added 88. The Huskies offense held the ball for 47 minutes.

The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a sweep of Laurentian University with a 5-0 victory Saturday night. The game was scoreless until the third period, when five different Huskies found the net.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept to an easy 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-13) victory over Malone on Saturday.

The Huskies soccer team plays at Findlay today.

The MTU women’s tennis team earned its second victory of the season Saturday, edging Findlay 5-4.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Wisconsin Saturday night.

The Northern Michigan University football team scored on its first three drives, and routed Malone 41-13 Saturday.

Finlandia
Presentation College scored six touchdowns in the second quarter, and routed the Finlandia University football team 51-21 Saturday. The Saints rolled up 597 yards of offense. Lions quarterback Ronald Brown ran for a touchdown, and passed for another.

The Finlandia volleyball team earned 3-0 wins over Grace Bible College (25-21, 25-26, 25-20) and Mount Mary University (25-17, 25-16, 25-14) on Saturday.

 

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings scored three times in the third period, and earned a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday. Teemu Pulkkinen scored twice for Detroit. Petr Mrazek made 44 saves to get the win. The Wings host the Lightning on Tuesday. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons picked up their first preseason victory with a 117-88 blowout of the Milwaukee Bucks Saturday night. Detroit blew the game open early, outscoring Milwaukee 37-16 in the first quarter. Marcus Morris led Detroit with 21 points. The Pistons continue their preseason schedule Tuesday night at Indianapolis.

MLB
In the National League Divisional Series Saturday, the Cubs defeated the Cardinals 6-3, and the Dodgers beat the Mets 5-2. Each of those best-of-five series is tied at a win per team.

The American League Divisional Series continues today. Kansas City plays at Houston – that set is tied at a win each. Toronto plays at Texas – the Rangers lead the series two games to none.

NFL
The unbeaten Packers entertain the Rams in a 1:00 NFL game game today. The winless Lions host the Cardinals in a 4:05 game. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
