The regular high school volleyball season wrapped up last night…
– At a triangular at Dollar Bay, Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated the Blue Bolts 3-0, and Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0. The Lakes finish the regular season unbeaten in Copper Mountain Conference play.
– L’Anse lost to Ontonagon 3-1.
The volleyball playoffs begin next week.

The high school football playoffs open this weekend…
– Calumet entertains Boyne City in a rematch of last year’s District title game. Pregame coverage begins around 12:40 tomorrow afternoon on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Chassell Panthers LogoThe Chassell boys cross country team was named the Small School Team of the Year in voting by the U.P. High School Cross Country Coaches Association yesterday. The Panthers won their third straight U.P. Division Three title last weekend. Chassell’s Mario Guidotti was named Division Three Coach of the Year. Clayton Sayen and Seth Helman of Houghton were named to the U.P. Boys Dream Team, and Lela Rautiola of Chassell was named to the U.P. Girls Dream Team.

The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Northern Michigan University tonight at 7:00 at MacInnes Arena. The Huskies and Wildcats will play again tomorrow night in Marquette.

MTU Athletics Logo BThe MTU football team hosts ninth-ranked Ashland tomorrow afternoon. This year’s Michigan Tech Hall of Fame class will be inducted at halftime, including football and track standout Bill Hauswirth, men’s basketball player JT Luginski, women’s basketball star Andrea Novak, Nordic skier Tom Wood, hockey players Brent Peterson and Scott White, and the 1974-75 Hockey Team.

The Tech soccer team wraps up its regular season at home against Northern Michigan today at 5:00.

The MTU women’s tennis team takes on Tiffin in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC tournament in Midland this evening.

The Huskies volleyball team plays at Ferris State tonight, and Grand Valley State tomorrow afternoon.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division this season. The coaches’ poll released yesterday has Grand Valley in first place, and Saginaw Valley State second. Northern Michigan is picked to finish fifth. Morgan Anderson of the Huskies was named to the preseason All-Conference team.

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team opens its season at Wisconsin-Stout tonight, and Wisconsin-Superior tomorrow night. The women’s hockey squad begins its campaign at Wisconsin-Eau Claire tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia volleyball team plays at Maranatha Baptist University tonight.

The Finlandia football team has the weekend off.

The Detroit Red Wings won their sixth straight game last night, a 2-1 shootout victory over the St. Louis Blues. Petr Mrazek made 31 saves. He matched Blues’ goalie stop for stop in the shootout, until Henrik Zetterberg finally won it in the eighth round. The Wings return home to host the Bruins tomorrow night.

The Detroit Pistons welcome the Orlando Magic to the Palace for their home opener tonight. Tipoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

For the first time in 71 years, the World Series returns to Wrigley Field tonight as the Chicago Cubs host the Cleveland Indians. The Fall Classic is tied at a win per team.

In last night’s NFL game, the Tennessee Titans built a big first half lead, and cruised past the Jacksonville Jaguars 36-22.
