Lakes Defeat Hornets for First Time Since 1955 – Sunday Sports Wrap

Tigers Hold On To First Place
Alex Avila’s two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the Indians last night. Victor Martinez also homered. With a lead in hand, Joe Nathan closed out the ninth for his 31st save.

The Tigers host the Indians again this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start against Trevor Bauer. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.

The Royals also won, so Detroit continues to lead Kansas City by a half-game in the American League Central Division.

Brewers Fall to Reds
Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoThe Brewers lost to the Reds 4-1 yesterday. Milwaukee managed only two hits against September call-up David Holmberg and two Cincinnati relievers. One was a homer by Aramis Ramirez.

The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Matt Garza will start against Mike Leake.

Saint Louis won, and Pittsburgh lost, so Milwaukee now trails the Cardinals by five games in the National League Central Division. They’re a game-and-a-half behind the Pirates, who hold the second wild card playoff position.

Lions, Packers Prep for Week Two
In the NFL this afternoon, the Lions play at Carolina at 1:00. The Packers host the Jets at 4:25.

MTU Football Rolls Over Malone
The Michigan Tech football team scored 35 points in the first half, and cruised to a 37-6 victory over Malone Saturday.  Tyler Scarlett threw four touchdown passes. The Huskies rushed for 264 yards, led by John Williams, who ran for 154 on 32 carries. Most of Tech’s starters left the game in the third quarter. Malone scored its only touchdown against the reserves in the fourth quarter. The Huskies will host Saginaw Valley State for the Homecoming game on Saturday.

The Michigan Tech soccer team used a strong second half to defeat Minnesota-Crookston 2-1 Friday night. Janelle Riedl scored the game-winning goal by redirecting a corner kick from Lexi Herrewig with 15 minutes remaining. Sarah Boyd scored her first goal as a Husky to tie the game earlier in the second half.

The Michigan Tech women’s tennis team earned its first win of the season Friday, defeating Ashland 7-2. The Huskies fell to Walsh 7-2 Saturday morning. Kwang Suthijindawong continued her perfect season with wins at both number-one singles and doubles.

The MTU volleyball team won its first two GLIAC matches over the weekend. The Huskies defeated Northwood 3-0 Saturday, after sweeping Lake Superior State 3-0 Friday night, Sylvie Rokosh led the Huskies with 13 kills in each match.

NMU Football Downs Quincy
The Northern Michigan University football team earned a 31-14 non-conference victory at Quincy Saturday evening. Shaye Brown went 16-23 with 220 yards through the air with one touchdown and an interception. Wyatt Jurasin rushed for 135 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Ryan Laberge kicked four extra points and a 38-yard field goal. The Wildcats play at Hillsdale Saturday.

Finlandia
Finlandia LionsThe Finlandia volleyball team was swept at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh tournament over the weekend… losing 3-0 to Ripon College, Martin Luther College, Saint Scholastica and Lawrence University.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team edged Robert Morris-Lake County 3-2 in overtime Saturday. Game details were not available. The women’s game was canceled. The men’s team plays at Saint Norbert today at noon.

Lake Linden-L'Anse Football 2014-09-13
The Lakes and Purple Hornets wrap up their first regular-season game since 1987.

High School Football
In high school football on Saturday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell took a 20-0 halftime lead, and went on to defeat L’Anse 33-20. Lakes’ quarterback Arthur Lyons ran 39 yards for one touchdown, and completed touchdown passes of 46 yards to Tyler Roose, and 34 yards to Lucas Klein. Brandon Kemppainen rushed for two touchdowns for the Purple Hornets, and completed 53-yard halfback option pass to Michael Anderson for another score. It was the first time since 1955 that the Lakes have defeated the Hornets.
– Ontonagon fell to Rapid River 36-22.
– Ewen-Trout Creek forfeited its game against Bellaire.

Friday night…
– Houghton earned its first win of the season, with a 38-6 triumph over Ironwood. Gremlins quarterback Ben Collaer ran for four touchdowns, and passed for another.
– Hancock took an early lead on a 40-yard Jack Fenton touchdown run, but Northland Pines scored the next 62 points, and defeated the Bulldogs 62-12.
– Calumet fell at Ishpeming 46-20. The Copper Kings took an early lead on a one-yard Kaden Kangas touchdown run… the first of his two scores. Ishpeming took advantage of two Calumet turnovers to take a 24-12 halftime lead.
– Baraga was shut out at Gogebic 56-0.
