Lakes Fall in Regional Final – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
The Lake Linden-Hubbell boys basketball season ended last night with a 69-53 loss to unbeaten North Central in the Class D Regional final. The Jets led by just a point at the end of the first quarter, but used a strong run late in the second quarter to build an 11-point advantage at halftime. The North Central defense held Brett Poissant and Tyler Roose to just five baskets from the field. Cody Kunnari led the Lakes with 16 points. Jets’ center Caleb Martin led all scorers with 19. Lake Linden ends one of the finest seasons in Copper Country basketball history with a record of 23-1. North Central will meet Hillman in the quarterfinals next week.

The Calumet girls basketball team will face unbeaten Laingsburg in the first Class C state semifinal game this afternoon at 1:00 in East Lansing. The winner of that game will take on the winner of the second game between Ypsilanti Arbor Prep and Flint Hamady. The title game will be played Saturday afternoon at 4:00.

Finlandia Softball Takes Two
At the Cobber Classic in Saint Paul yesterday, the Finlandia softball team defeated Bethany Lutheran 6-1, and the University of Northwestern 9-5. Freshman Adrianna Vasquez homered in each game. The Lions will face Concordia-Minnesota this morning, and Bethany College this afternoon.

Gibson CupGibson Cup Series Opens Tonight
The Gibson Cup Series opens tonight, as the Portage Lake Pioneers host the Calumet Wolverines. The best-of-three set continues tomorrow night at the Colosseum. Face-offs for the first two games are at 7:30. If a third game is needed, it will be played Saturday night at 5:00 at Dee Stadium. Listen for our broadcasts on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

NHL – Red Wings Visit Panthers
The Detroit Red Wings return to action tonight, when they visit the Panthers. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. Detroit will be without Pavel Datsyuk for the next two games, as he recovers from a lower-body injury. Darren Helm could return tonight, after missing seven games with a strained oblique.

NBA – Pistons Fall to 76ers
The Detroit Pistons lost to the Philadelphia 76ers 94-83 last night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 20 points for Detroit. The Pistons have lost 11 of their last 12 games, and host the Bulls Saturday night.

MLB Spring Training
The Tigers lost to the Pirates 8-7 last night. Ian Kinsler hit a pair of doubles for Detroit. The Tigers face the Nationals this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will start.

Gerardo Parra hit a three-run homer, as the Brewers got past the Royals 8-4 yesterday. Milwaukee will play the Giants this afternoon.

NFL
Several media outlets are reporting that the Detroit Lions have signed cornerback Rashean Mathis to a two-year contract.
