Lakes Fall to Wykons, MTU Hockey Wins Opener – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football yesterday, Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to West Iron County 24-16. The Lakes got on the board first, capping their first offensive possession with a one-yard run by Caleb Gregoire. The two-point conversion failed. The Wykons dominated after that, however, with Nathan Thomson scoring on 46 and 13-yard runs in the first half, and catching a Trey Bociek pass for a 64-yard scoring play late in the third quarter. Mario Fidalgo kicked a 25-yard field goal for West Iron. The Lakes closed the cap with a 35-yard Caleb Gregoire run with 1:07 remaining, but the onside kick attempt failed, and the Wykons were able to run out the clock.

In high school volleyball yesterday…
– Houghton at the Wright Invitational in Wrightstown, Wisconsin – no report.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell and Jeffers at the Ironwood-Hurley Invitational – no report.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University volleyball team wrapped up its Sisu Classic yesterday with 3-0 losses to Grace Christian (25-15, 25-22, 25-13) and Mount Mary (25-18, 25-23, 25-21) yesterday. In yesterday’s other matches, Buena Vista swept Grace Christian 3-0, and Mount Mary 3-0.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout at Grace Christian yesterday afternoon. Kirsten L’Esperance, Katie Brown and Erika Lambert scored for the Lions. Sam Linteo made six saves to get the win in net.

The Finlandia football team lost 63-6 to Olivet College yesterday. The Comets broke the game open with 35 points in the second quarter. The Lions’ only score also came in that very active second quarter, when Darin Johnson hit Kenny Kujawa for a 27-yard touchdown pass.

GLIAC

The MTU hockey team began its season with a 2-1 non-conference victory at Robert Morris University last night. Alec Broetzman’s short-handed goal with 46 seconds remaining in overtime was the game-winner. Alex Smith scored the Huskies’ other goal, and Matt Jurusik made 34 saves. Those teams play again this afternoon.

The Tech volleyball team’s seven-match win streak ended yesterday, with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-18) loss at 16th-ranked Ferris State. Olivia Ghormley had 11 kills, and Megan Utlak recorded 14 digs.

The Michigan Tech soccer team will play at Ferris State today.

The Tech football team was off this weekend.

The Northern Michigan University football team scored two first-quarter touchdowns, but was blanked the rest of the way in a 27-14 loss to Wayne State yesterday.

NHL

Tyler Bertuzzi had two goals and two assists, as the Detroit Red Wings opened their season with a 5-3 victory over the Nashville Predators last night. Anthony Mantha, Dylan Larkin and Luke Glendening also scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 39 saves.

The Wings host the Dallas Stars tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 the Lift, Wings pregame will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

MLB

In the American League divisional series yesterday…
– Houston defeated Tampa Bay 3-1. The Astros lead that set 2-0, with game three in Tampa tomorrow afternoon.
– Minnesota lost to New York 8-2. The Yankees are up 2-0 in that series, which continues tomorrow night in the Twin Cities.

Both National League divisional playoff series continue are tied at a win per team, and resume today. Atlanta plays at Saint Louis, and Los Angeles plays at Washington.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers visit the Dallas Cowboys for a 4:25 game today. The Detroit Lions have this weekend off. 

In tonight’s contest, the Colts visit the unbeaten Chiefs. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
