Lakes Stifle Trojans in Football Playoff Opener – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Lake Linden-Hubbell football team shut down Forest Park 27-6 in an Eight-Player Division Two regional semifinal game Saturday. Sammy Roberts rushed for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Danny Marcotte tossed a touchdown pass to Mason Holzberger, and ran for 70 yards. The Lakes defense held the Trojans off the board until the fourth quarter.

Lake Linden will host North Central in the regional championship game next weekend. The Jets outscored Posen 54-to yesterday to advance.

In other games involving Upper Peninsula teams…
• In Eight-Player Division One, Pickford downed Rudyard 38-16, and Norway outscored Newberry 56-48 in Region One on Friday, The Knights will visit the Panthers next weekend. In Region Two, Saint Ignace dispatched Central Lake 38-14, and Inland Lakes stopped Alcona 22-6 Friday. The Saints will host the Bulldogs next weekend.
• In Division Eight, Iron Mountain throttled Glen Lake 57-6 Friday. Ishpeming stopped East Jordan 20-6 Saturday. The Mountaineers will host the Hematites for the District title next weekend.
• In Division Seven, Menominee routed Benzie Central 50-14 Saturday. Charlevoix eliminated Traverse City Saint Francis 31-7 Friday night. The Maroons will entertain the Rayders Friday night for the District crown.
• In Division Six on Friday, Negaunee outscored Grayling 47-34, and Gladstone defeated Boyne City 28-7. The Miners will visit the Braves for the district title game next weekend.
• In Division Five, Kingsford ousted Howard City Tri-County 49-28 yesterday. Ogemaw Heights ousted Gladwin 28-23 Friday night. The district championship game will be played next weekend in West Branch.
• In Division Three, Marquette fell to Petoskey 26-7 Friday.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team continues to search for its first win of the season, after falling 3-1 at Clarkson Saturday night. Lachlan Getz scored the Huskies’ only goal. Max Vayrynen made 15 saves, and took the loss in net.

The Northern Michigan hockey team earned its first win, defeating Ferris State 4-1 Saturday night.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball squad fell 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 25-20) at 20th-ranked Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon. Lindy Oujiri led the Huskies with 15 kills. Tess Hayes recorded 39 assists. Amelia Albers had 17 digs.

The 12th-ranked Northern volleyball lost to Davenport 3-1 (27-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18) Saturday.

College Soccer

The Tech soccer team hosts Saginaw Valley State today at noon.

The NMU women’s soccer team entertains Ferris State today.

The NMU men’s team ended its season with a 3-0 loss to Davenport in the opening round of the GLIAC tournament Saturday.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team lost 44-13 at third-ranked Grand Valley State Saturday. Alex Fries threw a touchdown pass, but was sacked eight times. The Huskies running game was held to minus-four yards. Michael Bates Jr. intercepted two Lakers’ passes.

The NMU football squad lost 41-17 to Wayne State.

NHL

The Red Wings fell 4-1 to the Bruins Saturday night. Joe Veleno netted Detroit’s only goal, in the third period.

The Wings visit the Islanders tomorrow night.

NBA

The Pistons stopped the Bulls 118-102 last night. Cade Cunningham led Detroit with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jalen Duren added 23 points, and snared 15 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Thunder tomorrow.

MLB

The Diamondbacks pounded the Rangers 9-1 Saturday night, to even up the World Series at one win per team. Game three will be played in Arizona tomorrow.

It’s not just the Mets who are interested in hiring Brewers manager Craig Counsell. The Guardians have received permission to talk with Counsell about their open managerial job. Counsell’s contract with Milwaukee expires in a couple of days. Brewers officials are hoping he’ll choose to stay.

NFL

The Packers host the Vikings in a 1:00 game today.

The Lions entertain the Raiders tomorrow night on 99.3 The Lift. Oakland officials say quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will play, after missing time with a back injury.
