In high school football Friday night…
– Calumet clinched a playoff berth and a share of the WestPAC title with a 20-0 victory over L’Anse. Rory Anderson rushed for two touchdowns on short runs in the first quarter, and Grant Johnson added a 15-yard touchdown run in the third. – Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten, and ended Houghton’s playoff chances with a 28-0 victory over the Gremlins. Steven Suhonen scored two first-quarter touchdowns, one rushing, and one after catching a pass from quarterback Carter Crouch. See video highlights of the game here. The Lakes remain in first place in the Mid-Eastern Conference, and could claim a share of the season title with a win over North Dickinson next Saturday. – Hancock’s playoff chances suffered a big blow with a 60-32 loss to Gwinn. The Bulldogs need to win both of their final games to guarantee a playoff berth. MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team opened its WCHA schedule with a 3-1 loss at Minnesota State Friday night. All of the game’s goals came in the first period. Tech’s was scored by Shane Hanna. Matt Wintjes stopped 20 of 23 shots in net. The Huskies fall to 0-3 on the season, and play again tonight in Mankato.

The MTU soccer team scored two early goals, and hung on to edge Saginaw Valley State 2-1 Friday afternoon. The Huskies play at Northwood tomorrow at noon.

The MTU volleyball team defeated Walsh 3-1 (25-14, 25-18, 26-28, 25-20) Friday night. The Huskies head to Wheeling, West Virginia for games against Fairmont State and defending NCAA Division II National Champion Wheeling Jesuit today.

The women’s tennis team won 6-3 at Hillsdale Friday morning, and plays at Wayne State this morning.

The Huskies football team has the weekend off.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team began its regular season with a 3-2 victory over Wisconsin Friday night. Those teams skate again tonight at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

The NMU football team plays at Saginaw Valley State tonight.

Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University volleyball team fell 3-0 (23-25, 13-25, 21-25) to Concordia-Ann Arbor Friday night at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The Lions head to Ashland today, where they’ll face the University of Northwestern and Northland College.

The Finlandia football team plays at Trinity Bible College today.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team plays at the Moody Bible Institute this morning, and Robert Morris University-Springfield tomorrow. The women’s soccer team hosts Cleary University this afternoon at 2:00 at McAfee Field.

In the opening games of the National League Divisional Series yesterday, the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Washington Nationals 4-3, and the Chicago Cubs blanked the San Francisco Giants 1-0. The Dodgers and Nationals meet again this afternoon, and the Cubs and Giants play tonight.mlb-logo

In the American League Divisional Series, the Toronto Blue Jays got past the Texas Rangers 5-3, and the Cleveland Indians shut out the Boston Red Sox 6-0. Toronto and Boston each lead their series two games to none. Those series resume tomorrow.

The Detroit Pistons continue their preseason schedule at home against the Spurs on Monday. Hear selected Pistons regular-season games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Evgeny Svechnikov scored twice, as the Detroit Red Wings edged the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 Friday night in Toronto. Jimmy Howard got the win in net, with 19 saves. The Wings’ exhibition schedule wraps up tonight, as they face the Leafs again, in the Motor City. Detroit’s regular season opens Thursday at Tampa Bay.
