Lakes Take Homecoming Win – Sunday Sports Wrap

Tigers Face Elimination in ALDS

The Detroit Tigers host the Baltimore Orioles in a must-win American League Divisional Series game this afternoon. Detroit trails the best-of-five series two games to none, after falling to the Orioles 7-6 Friday. David Price will start for Detroit, and Bud Norris will counter for Baltimore. The game starts at 3:30. We will join it in progress as soon as the Lions’ game ends on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

We won’t know until game time whether outfielder Rajai Davis will be able to play. Davis is battling a sprained pelvic ligament. He had to leave Friday’s game in the fourth inning, when it tightened up as he ran the bases.

In yesterday’s National League Divisional Series, Brandon Belt’s homer in the 18th inning lifted the Giants to a 2-1 victory over the Nationals. At six hours and 23 minutes, it was the longest playoff game in Major League Baseball history. The Nationals lead the series two games to none. Matt Kemp’s homer in the eighth was the difference, as the Dodgers edged the Cardinals 3-2. That series is tied at one win per team.

Lions Prepare for Bills
IDetroit Lions Lionn NFL action, the Lions will host the Bills this afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. We’ll join the Tigers’ game in progress as soon as the Lions are done.

Detroit receiver Calvin Johnson is listed as questionable because of his ankle injury. Running backs Joique Bell and Theo Riddick will miss the game – Bell because of concussion symptoms, and Riddick because of a hamstring injury.

Red Wings Win Final Preseason Game
Red Wings LogoThe Detroit Red Wings slipped past the Bruins 4-3 in a shootout last night. Gustav Nyquist scored the game-winner. Riley Sheahan had a goal and an assist. The Wings begin their regular season Thursday night at home against Boston. We will cover the Red Wings again this season on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Tech Hockey Opens with Win

The Michigan Tech hockey team scored three times in the third period, and earned a 5-3 comeback victory over Lake Superior State in their season-opener Saturday night. Malcolm Gould scored the game-winner. Tanner Kero added an insurance goal, and Blake Pietila closed the game with an empty-netter. Reid Sturos and Alex Petan scored earlier in the game. Those teams play again tonight at 5:07 in the Soo.

The MTU soccer team spotted Ohio Dominican a goal in the first half, then came back to beat the Panthers 2-1 on Friday, Lexi Herreweg tied the game with a penalty-shot goal off the crossbar, and Taylor Archibald scored her first collegiate goal to win it. Tech has won five in a row, and remains unbeaten in GLIAC play. The Huskies host Walsh today at noon.

The MTU football team had the weekend off.

The Huskies’ volleyball team fell 3-2 at Malone Saturday. Jacqueline Aird turned in a school-record 36 digs in the match. Tech opened the weekend road trip with a 3-0 victory at Walsh Friday night. Sylvie Rokosh Aubrey Havlichek each had nine kills.

NMU Football Falls at SVSU
Saginaw Valley State University scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, and beat Northern Michigan University 14-7 Saturday evening.

Finlandia Volleyball Swept
Finlandia LionsThe Finlandia University volleyball team was swept at a triangular at North Central University Saturday… dropping the first match 3-0 to Martin Luther College, and then losing to the host Rams 3-1.The Lions lost 3-1 to Crown College Friday evening.

The Lions’ women’s soccer team lost 2-0 to Maranatha Baptist Bible University Saturday. The Lions travel to Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a game this afternoon.

Lakes Romp at Homecoming
In high school football yesterday…
Lake Linden-Hubbell Logo– Lake Linden-Hubbell celebrated homecoming with a 44-0 victory over Hancock. The Lakes took advantage of three early Bulldogs’ turnovers to build an early lead. Tyler Roose scored two touchdowns. Lake Linden improves to 5-1, and needs only one more win to clinch a playoff berth.
– Gogebic defeated Ontonagon 45-20 in an eight-man game. The win will not count for the Miners, who play the rest of their games in the 11-man division.

Friday night…
– West Iron County took command of the WestPAC with a 40-20 victory over Calumet. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime, but Alec Schmelebeck ripped off touchdown runs of 61 and 47 yards to break the game open. Schmelebeck finished the night with more than 300 yards rushing, and five touchdowns. Robert Erkkila scored three times for the Copper Kings. West Iron remains unbeaten on the season, and clinched a playoff berth with the victory. Calumet falls to 3-1 in conference play, and 3-3 overall, and will need to win its final three games to assure a playoff spot.
– Houghton lost at Northland Pines 53-16.
– L’Anse outscored Ironwood 42-30. Brandon Kemppainen scored six touchdowns for the Purple Hornets.
– Baraga lost at Hurley 51-6.
– Ewen-Trout Creek won this week’s game by forfeit, after Mid-Peninsula folded its program.

In high school volleyball Saturday, Houghton defeated Marquette 2-0 in the final at the NMU tournament. Calumet lost in the semifinals.
