L’Anse Wins Boys Bay Battle – Friday Sports Update

In high school boys’ basketball last night…
– Houghton shut down Hancock 63-27.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell stifled Calumet 69-34. Tyler Roose scored 22 for the Lakes, including his 1,000th career point.
– Chassell got past Jeffers 52-46.
– Dollar Bay outscored Ontonagon 61-50. Devin Schmitz had 31 for the Bays.
– L’Anse spotted Baraga a four-point halftime lead, then came back to take a 59-49 victory in the Battle of the Bay. The Purple Hornets opened the second half with a 22-5 run to take a commanding lead. Jonny DesLauriers led all scorers with 17 points for L’Anse. Brendan Varline scored 15 for the Vikings.

On the boys’ schedule tonight… Ewen-Trout Creek hosts Bessemer.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team will play at Wisconsin-Parkside tomorrow afternoon. The women’s team visits Minot State tomorrow afternoon.

In their first game without suspended coach Troy Mattson, the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team lost at second-ranked Lewis 68-58 last night. Alyssa Colla led the Wildcats with 17 points. Mattson was benched for four games by the university for publicly accusing Wayne State of cheating while recruiting a player.

Finlandia Women Fall at LSSU
The Finlandia women’s basketball team fell at Lake Superior State 74-65 yesterday. Marissa Burke of the Lions led all scorers with 36 points. The women’s team plays at Alma College tomorrow afternoon, and Adrian College Sunday afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s team entertains Clarke University tomorrow afternoon. Tip-off is at 1:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The Lions will play at Lake Superior State Sunday afternoon.
