L’Anse Wins OT Girls’ Bay Battle – Saturday Sports Update

– Houghton defeated West Iron County 59-43. Sloan Zenner scored 20 for the Gremlins.
– Calumet pounded Jeffers 67-33.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Chassell 46-29.
– Dollar Bay overcame a nine-point deficit to edge Ontonagon 47-44.
L'Anse Purple Hornets Logo– L’Anse got past Baraga 59-54. The Purple Hornets built a 10-point halftime lead, but the Vikings closed the gap, and tied it when Gaby Mayo sank a jumper off an inbound pass as the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation. Mayo led all scorers with 34 points. Abby Hendrickson scored 18 for L’Anse, and Bailey Froberg added 15.

In boys’ play Friday night, Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Bessemer 78-65.

Houghton-Gremlins-LogoIn high school hockey…
– Houghton doubled up Escanaba 6-3. Spencer Donnelly scored twice for the Gremlins.
– L’Anse lost to Cheboygan 10-2 at the Cheboygan Holiday Showcase Friday night. The Hornets will face the Kalamazoo Eagles today.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team will play at Wisconsin-Parkside this afternoon. The women’s team visits Minot State this afternoon.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia Women Downstate
The Finlandia women’s basketball plays at Alma College this afternoon, and Adrian College tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s team entertains Clarke University this afternoon. Tip-off is at 1:00 at the Paavo Nurmi Center. The Lions will play at Lake Superior State tomorrow afternoon.

In Great Lakes Hockey League play…
– The Portage Lake Pioneers edged Eagle River 7-6 in overtime Friday night. Connor Hannon scored the game-winner – his first goal in his first game as a Pioneer. Those teams play again tonight in Eagle River.
– Logan Rastello scored twice, as the Calumet Wolverines lost 7-6 at Fox Cities. The Wolverines play at Depere tonight.

NHL – Red Wings Lose Game, Howard
The Red Wings fell to the Islanders 2-1 Friday night. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard left the game in the first period with what the team has only described as a “lower body injury.” Petr Mrazek replaced him, and stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced. Howard is listed as “day-to-day,” but the Wings have called goalie Tom McCollum up from Grand Rapids. He’ll back up Mrazek in tomorrow’s home game against the Avalanche.

NBA – Pistons Lose 12th Straight Home Game
The Pistons’ home woes continued Friday night, as they lost to the Raptors 110-100. Brandon Jennings led Detroit with 22 points, on a night when a huge contingent of Toronto fans made the trip from Canada, and dominated the crowd. The Pistons play at Brooklyn tomorrow night.

NFL
In the NFL today, Philadelphia plays at Washington at 4:30, and San Diego visits San Francisco at 9:25. Hear both games on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Tomorrow, the Lions visit the Bears in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers play at Tampa Bay in a 1:00 game.
