Late Surge Powers Kings Past Gremlins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey last evening, Calumet skated past Houghton 5-3. The Gremlins opened the scoring when Jace Deforge found the net 71 seconds into the contest. A power play goal by Paul Sturos tied the game, but Brendan Miller’s tally put Houghton up 2-1 at the end of the first period. After Aaron Cogan gave the Gremlins a two-goal advantage early in the second period, the Copper Kings got four straight from Ayden Williams, Sturos, Jackson Rilei and Cam Anderson to take the win. Tom Erkkila had two assists. Aksel Loukus had 24 saves for the Copper Kings, and Troy Povich stopped 16 shots for the Gremlins.

In boys basketball last night…
 • Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 59-54.

In girls basketball last night… 
 • Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 53-42.

High school teams will be idle through Christmas weekend.

College Basketball

The Finlandia University basketball teams split their games against Wisconsin-Stout last night…
• The women claimed a 73-67 victory. The Lions took control with a big third quarter, then held the Blue Devils off down the stretch. Five Finlandia players reached double figures, led by Bailey Froberg with 23 points.
• The men lost 108-75. B.J. Williams scored 17 for the Lions.

NHL

The entire National Hockey League remains on a COVID-19 pause until at least Monday. The league has also decided not to have its players take part in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Beijing. Many of the games that are being missed now can be made up in the pause that had been planned for that.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 105-91 to the New York Knicks last night. Saben Lee came off the bench to lead Detroit with 16 points. Saddiq Bey and Cory Joseph each added 15.

The Pistons visit the Miami Heat tomorrow.

NFL

Last night, in two contests that were delayed because of COVID-19 issues…
• Matthew Stafford tossed two touchdown passes, as the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Seattle Seahawks 20-10.
• The Philadelphia Eagles outscored the Washington Football Team 27-17.

MLB

Detroit Tigers first base coach Kimera Bartee has died. Bartee collapsed Monday while visiting his father in Omaha, Nebraska. No cause of death has been announced. Bartee also played for the Tigers during three seasons in the late ’90s. He was just 49 years old.
