Lions Fall in Preseason Opener – Saturday Sports Wrap

Twilight League

The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League tournament will be held this weekend at the Stanton field. With five teams in the league this season, a play-in game between the two lowest seeds – Northern Driveline and Houghton Building Supply-Stanton – will be played this evening at 6:00. The semifinals and the championship game will take place tomorrow. Our coverage of all of tomorrow’s games will begin at 10:50 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Michigan Tech volleyball standout Laura De Marchi has been named the 2020-21 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. One male and one female athlete are selected each year from the GLIAC Commissioner’s Award honorees. De Marchi holds a 3.83 grade-point average in biomedical engineering while also pursuing a degree in electrical engineering with her extra year of eligibility. She holds several Huskies records. Ashland’s Trevor Bassitt is the male winner this year.

The Detroit Tigers fell to the Cleveland Indians 7-4 last night. Tyler Alexander gave up four runs over five innings, and took the loss. Eric Haase and Renato Núñez homered. Miguel Cabrera was hitless, as he continues pursuit of his 500th career home run.

The Tigers host Cleveland again tonight. Wily Peralta will start for the Bengals. Coverage will begin at 5:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers were rained out in Pittsburgh last night, and will play a day-night doubleheader against the Pirates today. Brett Anderson will start against Bryse Wilson in the afternoon game. Aaron Ashby returns from Nashville to face Mitch Keller in the nightcap.

Tyler Bass kicked a 44-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining, as the Buffalo bills defeated the Detroit Lions 16-15 in the preseason opener for both teams. Detroit trailed by 10 heading into the fourth quarter, but came from behind with two Randy Bullock field goals and a 24-yard touchdown run by Craig Reynolds. New Lions quarterback Jared Goff completed seven of nine passes for 56 yards. Listen for Lions regular-season games again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

Reynolds was signed as a free agent late this week. He arrived in Detroit Thursday morning, and didn’t meet his teammates or coaches until just before last night’s contest. He led the team in rushing with 49 yards.

Before last night’s game, the Lions fired head athletic trainer Dave Granito. Head coach Dan Campbell said there was no specific incident that prompted the move, but that the team wanted to go in a “different direction.” He indicated they have a replacement in mind. Assistant athletic trainer Tom Holt is filling in, for now.

The Green Bay Packers open their preseason campaign at home against the Houston Texans tonight.

The Detroit Red Wings are losing a front office leader. Ryan Martin has accepted a new position with the New York Rangers. Martin spent the last 14 years in the Detroit organization. For the past nine seasons, he was the Wings’ assistant general manager, and general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins. He will take on similar roles in New York.

The Wings have extended their minor-league affiliation with the Toledo Walleye for another three years. The Walleye serve as Detroit’s second-level farm team in the ECHL. The extension also keeps them connected to the Wings’ top American Hockey League farm team in Grand Rapids.

Listen for expanded high school football coverage this fall from Keweenaw Report Sports. Houghton games will air on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Calumet contests will air on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. We’ll also carry all of Lake Linden-Hubbell’s football games, starting Thursday, August 26th when the Lakes visit the Gogebic Miners on KBear 102.3.
