MLB

The Tigers got just two hits in a 5-2 loss to the Red Sox last night. One of those hits was a solo home run by Kerry Carpenter. The other was an RBI single by Riley Greene. Tarik Skubal pitched into the sixth, and was charged with all five Boston runs.

The Tigers play in Boston again this afternoon. Matt Manning will pitch against Brayan Bello. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Will Vest returned to the Tigers’ bullpen last evening, after spending time on the injured list. Chasen Shreve was designated for assignment to make room on the roster. He quickly cleared waivers, and could elect to become a free agent.

Mark Canha doubled home Brice Turang in the top of the 10th, as the Brewers shaded the White Sox 7-6 last night. Milwaukee overcame a shaky start by Corbin Burnes, who pitched into the sixth inning, and allowed five runs. Victor Caratini homered. Abner Uribe retired the Sox in order in the bottom of the 10th to earn his first major league save.

The Brewers play in Chicago again this evening. Brandon Woodruff will start against Jesse Scholtens.

The Cubs and Reds both won, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division remains at two-and-a-half games.

Reports are circulating that the Brewers are exploring possible relocation to another city. The team’s lease for American Family Field runs through 2030, but officials say the stadium needs nearly a half-billion dollars in maintenance and upgrades. The stadium is owned by the state of Wisconsin, and the authority that manages it is said to be broke. Negotiations to provide more funding have stalled.

NFL

The Lions used a strong second half to defeat the Giants 21-16 in their exhibition season opener last night. Nate Sudfeld played most of the game at quarterback, completing 15 of 28 passes for 194 yards. He tossed two interceptions. Jared Goff did not see action. Maurice Alexander returned a punt 95 yards for a touchdown. Detroit’s running game was held to just 33 yards.

Detroit has signed receiver and kick returner Kalif Raymond to a contract extension that will run through the 2025 season.

The Packers began their preseason campaign with a 36-19 victory at Cincinnati. Jordan Love played the first two series, and completed seven of 10 passes, with one touchdown. Sean Clifford impressed as Love’s replacement, hitting on 20 of 26 passes for 208 yards and a score, but also throwing two interceptions. Emanuel Wilson rushed for two touchdowns, including a late 80-yard scoring run.
