Lions Place Stafford on COVID List – Sunday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Tigers’ scheduled game against the Cincinnati Reds yesterday was rained out. It will be made up this afternoon as part of a doubleheader. Rony Garcia will face Anthony DeSclafani in the opener. Daniel Norris will make his season debut in the nightcap, with the Reds’ starter still to be determined. Per the temporary rules adopted for the 2020 season, each game will last seven innings.

The Milwaukee Brewers entire weekend series against the Saint Louis Cardinals has now been canceled, including today’s doubleheader. Two Cardinals players tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday. One additional player and some staff members received positive tests yesterday.

An announcement from Major League Baseball anticipates that the four games set to be played this week between Saint Louis and the Detroit Tigers beginning tomorrow will will take place. The original schedule put the first two in Detroit, and the second two in Saint Louis. However, because of COVID-19 concerns, all four will now be played in Detroit. Tomorrow will be an off day, and the teams will play a doubleheader Wednesday.

Milwaukee outfielder Lorenzo Cain has opted out of the remainder of the season. He cited concerns abut the health of his wife and three children. Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez will miss the whole season because of heart inflammation caused by COVID-19.

In an interview with the Associated Press yesterday, baseball commissioner Rob Manfred expressed confidence that the season can continue, although he conceded that not all teams may play all 60 games. The Miami Marlins are scheduled to resume their campaign Tuesday at Baltimore. The Marlins haven’t played since Wednesday. At least 18 members of their roster are infected.

The Detroit Lions have placed starting quarterback Matthew Stafford on the COVID-19 list. He is the eighth player on the team to be included on the list, which includes those who have tested positive, or who have been in close contact with someone else who is infected. Because of privacy rules, teams cannot reveal which players are actually infected. Players may release information about their own health, if they wish.

The Lions have completed signing their 2020 draft class. Seventh-round pick Jashon Cornell, a defensive lineman out of Ohio State, inked his deal yesterday.
