Lions Pound Broncos, Near Playoff Clinch – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Both Houghton High School swim teams finished second to Marquette, and ahead of Sault Ste. Marie, in a three-way meet at Marquette High School Saturday.
• On the girls side, Marquette recorded 172 points, Houghton 92, and the Soo 61. Meg Ruohonen won the diving competition.
• On the boys side, Marquette logged 134 points, Houghton 103.5, and the Soo 70.5. Beau Haataja earned wins in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard back stroke. Baha Saleem took the diving title.

The youth Frozen Cup hockey tournament concludes today, with games at Meadowbrook Arena and the Baraga Ice Rink. See results and today’s schedules here.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team will host Kentucky Wesleyan this afternoon at 1:00 at the SDC.

The Northern Michigan women’s team will face Quincy University at Wisconsin Dells this afternoon.

GLHL

The Calumet Wolverines lost 5-2 to the Fond du Lac Bears Saturday night.

NHL

The Red Wings fell 1-0 to the Flyers Saturday evening. Cam York’s first period goal was the only score. Alex Lyon stopped 14 of 15 shots before leaving the game with an injury in the second period. Ville Husso relieved him, and stopped all 14 shots he faced.

The Wings host the Ducks tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, we’ll join the Wings game in progress after high school basketball on KBear 102.3.

Detroit officials have only said that Lyon suffered a “lower body injury.” There’s been no indication of its severity, or if he’ll miss playing time.

NBA

The Pistons’ team-record losing streak reached 23 games Saturday night, as they fell to the Bucks 146-114. Cade Cunningham scored 25 points, and Bojan Bogdanovic added 24.

The Pistons visit the Hawks tomorrow evening.

NFL

Jared Goff threw five touchdown passes, as the Lions blasted the Broncos 42-17 Saturday night. Sam LaPorta caught three of those scoring tosses. Jhamyr Gibbs rushed for 100 yards and one score. At 10-4, Detroit could clinch a playoff berth yet this weekend, depending on the results of several other contests.

Lions quarterback Teddy Bridgewater says this season will be his last in the NFL. Bridgewater was brought in to back up Jared Goff. He’s seen the field only once – on a a kneel-down play to close out Detroit’s win over the Panthers.

In Saturday’s other games…
• The Bengals scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns, then got a 29-yard Evan McPherson field goal in overtime to edge the Vikings 27-24.
• The Colts stymied the Steelers 30-13.

The Packers welcome the Buccaneers in a 1:00 game today.

In tonight’s contest, the Jaguars host the Ravens. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift.
