The Tech women’s team leads the first NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Midwest Regional Rankings released yesterday. The top eight teams in the final region rankings will earn bids to the NCAA Tournament. The Northern Michigan women’s team is rated ninth. The Tech men’s team is rated sixth. Finlandia Sweeps Samsons
The Finlandia men’s basketball team finished its season with an 81-66 victory over Gogebic Community College last night. The Lions scored the first 13 points of the game, and were never challenged. Tyler Koski scored 19 for Finlandia, and Brandon Robinette added 17.  The Lions close their season with a record of 12-13.

The Finlandia women’s team also got off to a quick start, and defeated the Samsons 66-49. Marissa Burke paced the Lions with 17 points. Dollar Bay’s Julia Daavettila added 14 points, and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Finlandia University hockey team captain Travis Armstrong has signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Kalamazoo Wings of the East Coast Hockey League.

NHL – Red Wings Edge Blackhawks
The Detroit Red Wings earned a rare shootout win last night, shading the Blackhawks 3-2. Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar scored in the shootout. Jimmy Howard stopped 34 shots, plus three in the shootout. Detroit is now 3-8 in shootouts this season. The Wings skate at Dallas Saturday night. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Return Tomorrow
The Pistons return from the all-star break tomorrow night, when they host the Bulls. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

MLB – Cabrera Hoping for Opening Day
Detroit Tigers’ first baseman Miguel Cabrera has been cleared to begin running, and a limited schedule of baseball activity. Cabrera is recovering from foot surgery. Team officials say there’s a chance he’ll be ready for Opening Day. Tigers’ pitchers and catchers report for spring training in Lakeland today, with the first workouts scheduled for tomorrow. Position players report on Tuesday.
