LL-H Baseball, Hancock Softball Advance in Districts – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In baseball yesterday, the Division Four District quarterfinals…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell advanced with a 10-6 victory over Wakefield-Marenisco.
• Jeffers ousted L’Anse 17-4.
• Hancock’s season ended with a 6-3 loss to Ironwood.

On Friday in Ironwood, the Red Devils will face Ontonagon in the first semifinal at 11:00 Eastern Time. Lake Linden-Hubbell will play Jeffers at 1:00 Eastern. The district championship game will begin at 3:30 Eastern Time.

In regular season softball yesterday afternoon…
• Houghton and Westwood split their doubleheader, with the Patriots taking the first contest 13-6, and the Gremlins claiming the nightcap 12-8. The Gremlins wind up in a three-way tie for first place in the WestPAC, along with Westwood and Negaunee.
• Calumet varsity v Escanaba JV – no report.

In Division Four District softball quarterfinals at Hancock yesterday afternoon…
• Gogebic ousted Ironwood 15-5.
• Hancock eliminated Lake Linden-Hubbell 7-2. Ellie Heinonen had two hits for the Bulldogs. Sadie Biekkola had 10 strikeouts and gave up just one hit in the complete game victory. Emily Jokela struck out 15 batters for the Lakes.

On Friday at the Driving Park, Baraga will face Gogebic at 11:00. Hancock will take on L’Anse at 1:00. The championship game will be played at 3:00.

At the WestPAC track and field championships yesterday…
• Houghton won the boys title, easily outscoring Negaunee. Calumet placed third, and Hancock seventh. The Gremlins’ Eric Weiss finished first in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Dryden Nelson of the Copper Kings took the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
• Negaunee claimed the girls title by a wide margin over Houghton. Calumet was fifth, and Hancock seventh.

In golf, the U.P. Division One and Two finals will be played today.
• Baraga, Calumet and Houghton are in Division One. Boys will compete at Sage Run in Escanaba, and girls will play at Sweetgrass in Harris.
• Hancock, Jeffers are in Division Two. Boys and girls will compete at the George Young Recreation Complex in Iron River.

The Division Three finals will be played tomorrow.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play this evening…
• At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s takes on McGann’s/Northern Auto in a Doubleheader beginning at 6:15.
• At the Hancock Driving Park, Downtowner Two faces Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics at 6:15, and then plays Amy J’s Pasty and Bake Shop at 7:30.

NHL

The Western Conference final opened last night, with the Avalanche outscoring the Oilers 8-6.

The Eastern Conference final between the Lightning and the Rangers begins tonight in New York.

NBA

The NBA championship series between the Warriors and Celtics opens tomorrow night.

MLB

The Tigers and Twins split their doubleheader yesterday. Minnesota took game one, 8-2. Rony García gave up six runs over five innings. In the nightcap, Jonathan Schoop provided all the scoring in a 4-0 victory, with a two-run homer in the first inning, and a two-run single in the second. Detroit lost yet another starting pitcher, though, as Joey Wentz left the game after four innings with a shoulder strain.

Those teams will play again tonight in Detroit. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Bailey Ober. Coverage will begin at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Patrick Wisdom’s homer off Brad Boxberger in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Cubs an 8-7 victory over the Brewers last night. Victor Caratini homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers visit the Cubs again tonight. Jason Alexander has been called up from Nashville to start for the Crew. He’ll make his major league debut at age 29. Kyle Hendricks will counter for Chicago.

Horseshoes

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
• Dreamland Two downed Calumet Electronics 7-2.
• Rocky’s dispatched Drift Inn 8-1.
• L and L shut down Loading Zone 8-1.
• Dreamland One stopped Ahmeek Fire Department 8-1.
• Harter’s Party Store got past Bucko’s Party Store 6-3.
• Calumet One defeated 41 Lumber 6-3.
