MLB

Ryan O’Hearn’s home run off Zac Reininger in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Kansas City Royals a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers last night. O’Hearn’s one-out shot came after Detroit had tied the game in the top of the ninth on a Ronny Rodriguez single that scored Victor Reyes. Willi Castro also tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate. Reyes had four hits.

The Tigers play at Kansas City again tonight. Edwin Jackson will start against Jakob Junis. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has claimed outfielder Troy Stokes Jr. off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers. Stokes was designated for assignment by the Crew over the weekend. The Tigers have assigned him to Toledo. To make room on the 40-man roster, Detroit released pitcher Ryan Carpenter.

Eric Thames’ three-run homer powered the Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the Houston Astros yesterday. The home run ball flew clear out of Miller Park. Jordan Lyles pitched into the seventh inning, giving up two runs, and earning the win.

The Brewers have today off, and begin a home set against the Chicago Cubs tomorrow night. Chase Anderson will start against José Quintana.

The Cubs and Cardinals also won, so Milwaukee remains in third place in the National League Central Division, seven games behind Saint Louis, and four games behind Chicago.

NHL

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall is retiring. Kronwall spent all 15 of his NHL seasons in Detroit, and was a member of the 2008 Stanley Cup championship team. He will stay with the club as an advisor to general manager Steve Yzerman.

Finlandia

Freshman Finlandia University goalkeeper Sam Linteo has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. Linteo earned her first collegiate shutout in the Lions’ 1-0 victory over Northland College on Sunday.

Golf

Today is the deadline to sign up for the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing. The outing will take place next Wednesday, with a shotgun start at 9:00 at the Portage Lake Course. The cost for a team of four is $400, which includes green fees, cart, lunch and two drink tickets. Contact the Chamber office to register.

Our high school football coverage continues Friday, when Houghton entertains L’Anse. The pregame show begins at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
