LL-H Girls Win 3rd Straight U.P. Track Title – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school tournament softball yesterday…
– In Division Four, L’Anse won a district championship, defeating Gwinn 10-0 in the semifinals, and Ishpeming 12-2 in the title game. The Purple Hornets will face Bark River-Harris Saturday at 11:00 Eastern Time at Norway in the regional semifinals. Hancock will play Rudyard in the second semifinal at 1:00. We’ll broadcast both games, and the regional title match if either local team advances, on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In the Division Three district at Westwood, Calumet defeated Houghton 17-9 in the semifinals, then fell to Negaunee 8-0 in the championship match.

In high school tournament baseball yesterday…
– In Division Four at Ironwood, L’Anse lost to the Gogebic Miners 10-7 in the semifinals. Jeffers won its semifinal game, 12-11 over Ironwood. The Jets battled the Miners into extra innings in the championship game, but lost 9-8 in eight innings.
– In Division Three at Negaunee, Calumet blanked Houghton 12-0 in a semifinal game that ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. The Copper Kings then lost to Negaunee 7-0 in the title match.

At the U.P. Track and Field Division Three championships yesterday at Kingsford…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell won its third straight championship, easily outscoring runner-up North Dickinson. Chassell finished sixth, Ontonagon eighth, Baraga 11th, and Ewen-Trout Creek 16th. For the Lakes, Mariah Willmer won the 800-meter run. Jamie Hendrickson won the high jump. Camaryn Crouch took the pole vault. The 4×400 relay team of Willmer, Handrickson, Melissa Wagner, and Piper Tarvis took first place. Chassell’s 4×800 relay team of Lela Rautiola, Trisha Pietila, Jenna Lietila and Paige Sleeman finished first. Baraga’s Jaylyn Lindemann won the shot put. Ontonagon’s Holly Jo Wardynski set a new meet record in the discus throw. See full results here.
– The Lakes finished second to Bessemer on the boys’ side. Ontonagon was eighth, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 10th, Chassell 13th, and Ewen-Trout Creek tied for 17th. The Lakes’ relay team of Kellen Klein, Will Lyons, Caleb Klein and Carter Crouch took first place in the 4×100 and 4×200. Cole Gregoire won the high jump and the long jump. In the Division Two championships…
– The Saint Ignace girls earned an easy team victory. Hancock was sixth, and L’Anse eighth. See full results here.
– Ishpeming won the boys crown, with Hancock 9th and L’Anse 10th. Austin Salani of the Bulldogs won the pole vault. See full results here.

In the Division One championships…
– Marquette edged out Negaunee to take the team title. Houghton was sixth, and Calumet eighth. Lilly Baker of the Gremlins won the pole vault. See full results here.
– Gladstone won the boys meet, with Calumet fourth, and Houghton ninth. See full results here.

MLB

Daniel Norris struggled, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Atlanta Braves 10-5 yesterday. Norris gave up two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and two more before exiting the game in the sixth.

The Tigers continue that interleague set against the Braves in Atlanta this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against Julio Teheran. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:55 on 99.3 The Lift.

Orlando Arcia’s second two-run homer of the day powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 12-10, 12-inning victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. Keston Hiura’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth forced extra innings. Mike Moustakas and Christian Yelich also homered for the Crew. Brandon Woodruff labored into the fifth inning, and was charged with six runs.

That series concludes in Pittsburgh this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Jordan Lyles.

The Brewers have placed starter Gio Gonzalez on the injured list with a case of “dead arm.” Manny Piña has been brought off the disabled list, after a rehab stint for a hamstring issue.

NHL

The Boston Bruins routed the Saint Louis Blues 7-2 last night, to take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup series Game four will be played tomorrow in Saint Louis.

NBA

The NBA Championship Series continues tonight, as the Toronto Raptors host the Golden State Warriors. Toronto leads that set 1-0.
