LSSU Takes GLI Crown – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Lake Superior State University won its first Great Lakes Invitational Tournament title yesterday, with a 6-3 victory over Michigan Tech in the championship match. The Lakers struck early, with two goals midway through the first period. Tech got one back when Jake Lucchini scored late in the first, and tied it with and Alex Smith power play tally early in the second. Lake State reclaimed the lead with two goals later in the second stanza. Trenton Bliss narrowed the gap with a power play goal early in the third period, but the Lakers scored two late empty-netters to put the game away. Robbie Beydoun stopped 34 shots. The Lakers outshot the Huskies 40-21.

Lucchini was named to the All-Tournament Team. Lake Superior State’s Diego Cuglietta was named the Most Valuable Player.

In the consolation game, the University of Michigan and Michigan State battled to a 2-2 draw in a fight-filled game that included 22 penalties.

The Detroit Red Wings suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to the Florida Panthers last night. Detroit got off to a fast start, with goals by Andreas Athansiou, Gustav Nyquist and Thomas Vanek in the first period. Florida tied the game with a trio of second period goals. After a scoreless third period and overtime, Jonathan Huberdeau tallied the only goal in the shootout. Jimmy Howard made 24 saves, and took the loss in net. The Wings host the Calgary Flames tomorrow night. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
