Marquette Hockey Player to Finlandia – Wednesday Sports Wrap

MLB: Tigers Fall to Second Place
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoThe struggling Tigers dropped out of first place in the American League Central with an 11-4 loss to the Royals last night. A few days after recording his first major-league complete game, Max Scherzer gave up seven runs in the second inning to take the loss. Detroit now trails Kansas City by a half-game. It’s the first time the Tigers have fallen out of first place since last July 2nd.

The Tigers host the Royals again this afternoon. Drew Smyly will face Jeremy Guthrie. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoBrewers Slam D’Backs
Jonathan Lucroy’s grand slam powered the Brewers past the Diamondbacks 7-5. Lucroy’s second homer of the game came after Arizona reliever Evan Marshall had loaded the bases by hitting Milwaukee batter Ryan Braun. Marshall actually threw two pitches behind Braun. The first missed, and the second one smacked him in the back. Marshall was thrown out of the game.

The Brewers continue that set against the Diamondbacks tonight. Matt Garza will start against Wade Miley.

In Copper Country Twilight League Baseball last night…
– At the Dollar Bay Field, Pat’s Foods defeated BlueSky Health 8-1. Lee Naugle allowed just five hits to earn the win.
– At the Stanton Field, the Wildcats scored eight runs in the first inning… but Mosquito Inn came back to take a 10-9 victory. Toivola sealed it with a couple of runs in the top of the seventh. Nick Bolton had four hits, including two home runs, for Mosquito Inn.

– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Coca Cola/Miller’s Recreation meets The Marley Bar at 7:30.
– At Hurontown, Bucko’s/Labatts faces Nutini’s at 6:15… then takes on 906/Pilgrim River Steakhouse at 7:30.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, Erickson Crowley Peterson plays The Goal Post at 6:15… and then faces North Pointe Trucking at 7:30.

Northern Michigan Takes Both Border Classics
Both Northern Michigan teams earned victories in the first Kiwanis Border Classic All Star Game at Gogebic Community College last night. The game featured high school players from the Western U.P. against players from Northern Wisconsin. The Michigan girls took an 87-68 victory. Julia Daavettila from Dollar Bay earned MVP honors with 15 points. Brooke Turin from Ontonagon scored nine points. Madi Swanson and Valerie Rajala from L’Anse each added seven, as did Houghton’s Kelsie Richards.

The Michigan boys raced past Wisconsin 112-89. Ironwood’s Adam Mackey earned MVP honors with 19 points. Jimmy Veker from L’Anse added 12, and teammate Ryan LaBerge scored eight. Houghton’s Trent Keteri had 10 points.

Finlandia Adds Hockey Players
Finlandia University has added three men’s hockey players to next season’s roster… including a Marquette native. Cody Wickstrom is a defenseman who played for Fort Frances in the Superior International Junior Hockey League the last two seasons. He spent the previous two seasons with the Marquette Electricians. P.J. Partington is from Southampton, Pennsylvania, and can play both forward and defense. He spent last season with the Warwick Wildcats in the Delaware Valley Hockey League. Ben Sveison hails from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Last season, he was a captain for the Winnipeg South Blues of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Pistons Name D-League Team
Grand Rapids DriveThe Detroit Pistons’ new Developmental League team will be known as the Grand Rapids Drive. The team has been moved to Grand Rapids from Springfield, Massachusetts, and will be affiliated exclusively with the Pistons. The team colors and uniforms will mirror the Pistons’ red, white and blue. Until now, Detroit has assigned D-League players to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
