MLB – Tigers Can’t Close Out Tribe
Buck Farmer struggled in his fill-in start for Justin Verlander, and the Detroit Tigers lost to the Cleveland Indians 8-2 yesterday. Farmer gave up five runs before leaving in the sixth inning. J.D. Martinez drove in Detroit’s only runs with a homer in the seventh.

After winning three of their four games in Cleveland, the Tigers return home to begin a four-game series with the Chicago White Sox this afternoon. Alfredo Simon will pitch against Carlos Rodon. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Anticipating that Justin Verlander’s stiff back will loosen up in time for his next start, the Tigers sent Farmer back to Toledo after the game. They brought up reliever Bruce Rondon, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since September of 2013. He missed all of last season after Tommy John surgery, and all of this season with biceps tendinitis.

Jimmy Nelson turned in eight strong innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers got past the New York Mets 4-1. Milwaukee staked Nelson to a quick two-run lead in the first inning. He gave up just two hits, one a solo home run by Curtis Granderson.

The Brewers wrap up that set with the Mets this afternoon. Taylor Jungmann will start against Jacob deGrom.

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball play last night…
-At Hurontown, the result of the game between B and B Bar/Daytona Body Shop and Erickson Crowley Peterson was not reported.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, McGann’s/Northern Auto took both ends of a doubleheader from Bucko’s/Labatt’s… 25-16 and 26-16. Brad Anderson and Aron Butkovich each had eight hits on the night for Bucko’s. McGann’s stats were not posted.

Women’s Fast Pitch Softball
The only report from the Women’s Fast Pitch league last night is that Pat’s Foods forfeited their game to Mattila Rock and Dock because of a lack of players.

– At the Wolverine field, Pat’s Foods/Mosquito Inn takes on Wolverine/Orbit.

NBA Draft Tonight
The NBA Amateur Draft will be held tonight. The Detroit Pistons hold the eighth and 38th picks.

Hockey Huskies Name Captains
The Michigan Tech hockey team will have two co-captains next season. Alex Petan and Cliff Watson were awarded the honor yesterday. Petan will be a senior, and Watson a junior. Shane Hanna and Michael Neville will be alternate captains.

KBIC Fishing Derby Saturday
The annual KBIC Kids Fishing Derby will be held Saturday at the Sand Point pond, near the lighthouse at the Ojibwa Recreation Area. Registration for kids ages four through 12 will be open from 9:00 until noon, and fishing will take place between 10:00 and 2:00. Other events include a carnival and games, and there will be a lot of good food. All are invited, at no charge.
