MHSAA Cautiously Plans for Fall Sports – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

The Michigan High School Athletic Association says that, at this point, it plans to play all scheduled fall sports this fall.

Michigan’s “Return to School Roadmap” released by Governor Gretchen Whitmer Wednesday assigns the task of establishing plans, procedures and safety protocols for high school sports to the MHSAA. Executive director Mark Uyl says he appreciates the confidence and responsibility that has been given to the association, and that staff members have been working on returning sports to schools since the 2020 spring seasons were canceled in March.

Uyl emphasized that the key to being able to stage fall sports will be preventing another peak in COVID-19 infections. He urged all residents to take the appropriate steps now to assure that the state will be in recovery stage five or six at the end of the summer.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers have signed four undrafted free agents. They include first baseman Trevin Esquerra from Loyola Marymount; pitcher Carson King from Florida Southern College and the College of Central Florida; outfielder Austin Langworthy from the University of Florida, and outfielder D.J. Poteet from Wake Forest.

NFL

Faced with skyrocketing COVID-19 infection rates in several of its key cities, the National Football League has decided to reduce the number of preseason contests this year from four to two.

League officials still plan to begin the regular season September 10th, and play games in teams’ regular home stadiums. Discussions between team owners and players union representatives about coronavirus safety procedures are continuing.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last night…
