MHSAA Moves Jeffers to Class C

The Jeffers High School athletic program has been moved up to Class C by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.

Assignments for next season are based on this season’s enrollment. Jeffers slid in just above the 181-student limit that would have kept them in Class D. Last year, Jeffers’ MHSAA enrollment was 180. It’s the only local school to change classes this year.

For the first time since 1998, football playoff divisions have been set before the season begins…
– Hancock has been assigned to Division Five;
– Calumet and Houghton will compete in Division Six;
– L’Anse will play in Division Seven;
– Ontonagon has been assigned to eight-player Division One;
– Lake Linden-Hubbell will compete in eight-player Division Two.

The early football assignment is part of a rules change that was adopted more than a year ago, and is being implemented this fall. The way playoff points are awarded has also been modified. Playoff qualification will depend solely on playoff points earned during the regular season, with no automatic entry for teams that win six games.

The expected tournament division assignments for both boys and girls basketball include…
– Houghton in Division Two;
– Calumet, Hancock, Jeffers and L’Anse in Division Three;
– Chassell, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Baraga, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Ontonagon in Division Four.

Assignments could shift slightly if the number of teams participating in the tournaments changes.
