Michaelson, Stream Among UPSHF Inductees – Monday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school baseball Saturday at Negaunee…
– Calumet defeated Iron Mountain 6-5, and lost to Negaunee 8-4.
– L’Anse lost to Negaunee 5-2, and fell to Iron Mountain 8-6.

In softball Saturday at Calumet, Westwood blanked Houghton 3-0, and defeated Calumet 8-4.

In softball today…
– Calumet plays at Houghton.
– Hancock entertains Baraga.

In track, Hancock, Calumet, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Houghton, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell, Jeffers, L’Anse, Baraga, West Iron County, and Ontonagon will compete at the Copper Country Invitational at Hancock.

In golf, the Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, Lake Linden-Hubbell, and L’Anse girls teams play at the Calumet Invitational.

MLB
Jose Iglesias singled home JaCoby Jones with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Seattle Mariners 5-4 yesterday. The Tigers played without the injured Miguel Cabrera, Nicholas Castellanos, Leonys Martin, Jeimer Candelario and projected starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann. In Zimmermann’s place, Blaine Hardy pitched into the fifth and gave up eight hits, but allowed just two runs. Niko Goodrum had three hits, including a home run.

The Tigers host the Cleveland Indians tonight. Mike Fiers will start against Carlos Carrasco. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Freddy Peralta struck out 13 batters in his major league debut, as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-3 yesterday. Peralta pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning. Travis Shaw and Jesús Aguilar homered.

The Brewers open a series at Arizona tonight. Junior Guerra will pitch against Patrick Corbin.

Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson has been placed on the 10-day disabled list because of illness. He missed his start Saturday, and will miss one more before he’s eligible to return.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night, Washington defeated Tampa Bay 6-2. The Capitals lead the Eastern Conference finals 2-0, with game three scheduled for tomorrow.

Tonight, Las Vegas skates at Winnipeg. The Jets are up 1-0 in the Western Conference series.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs, Boston opened the Eastern Conference finals last night with a 108-83 victory over Cleveland. That series continues tomorrow.

The Western Conference series opens tonight, when Golden State tips off at Houston.

Ontonagon Lake Trout Classic
Tomorrow is the registration deadline for this weekend’s Aspirus Ontonagon Lake Trout Classic. Events this year include include the Ladies Powder Puff Tourney on Friday, a pre-tournament event on Friday, and the Lake Trout Classic Saturday and Sunday. UP Hall of Fame
The 47th class of the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame was inducted Saturday night. Honorees include Don Michaelson, who was an all-state football player and shot put champion at L’Anse in the early 70s, and earned junior college all-American football honors at Mesabi State Junior College. The other new Hall of Fame members are former Ishpeming and Michigan Tech basketball standout Sarah Stream Stanek; longtime basketball coach Jack Ingalls; golf and ski standout Ingrid Gallo from Ironwood; former Northern Michigan University football coach Herb Grenke; the late Rich McCarthy from Kingsford, who was NMU’s Most Valuable Player as a quarterback in 1969; Marquette native and former NMU basketball team captain Jim Karabetsos; the late track and cross country coach Mike Mickelson from Eben; Pete Pericolosi, a basketball standout at Iron Mountain and longtime coach at Menominee; and golf and basketball coach Karen Plaisier from Negaunee.

The Hall of Fame college scholarship winners were also honored at the ceremony Saturday, including Laura Lyons from Lake Linden-Hubbell, and Jake Witt from Ewen-Trout Creek.
