Miggy Clubs Two as Tigers Fall – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball this evening…
• Houghton entertains Ishpeming.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes Ontonagon.
• Jeffers hosts L’Anse.
• The Hancock match at Iron Mountain has been canceled.

In cross country yesterday, the Houghton boys and girls swept the Dollar Bay-Chassell meet at the Chassell Trails. The host Blue Bolts took second in each meet. Ingrid Seagren and Paige Sleeman finished first and second in the girls competiton, and Mercedes Gregorson of the Gremlins placed fifth. On the boys side, Houghton’s Eric Weiss bested Ewen-Trout Creek’s Jonah Nordine to take the title. Gremlins Brandon Peterson, Jake Sullivan, Davin Evans, and Evan Labyak rounded out the top six. See full results here.

The Detroit Tigers’ late comeback bid fell short last night, as they lost 7-6 to the Minnesota Twins. The Twins scored six runs off Casey Mize over the first five innings, then added one off Nick Ramirez in the bottom of the sixth. That proved to be the game winner, as Detroit scored three in the top of the sixth on Miguel Cabrera’s first home run of the night, and then made it close when Cabrera hit another three-run shot in the top of the ninth.

The loss officially eliminated the Tigers from playoff contention.

The Tigers begin their final scheduled series of the season tonight at Kansas City. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Kris Bubic. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage of tonight’s Tigers game will begin at 7:40 on KBear 102.3.
