Minard Wins CopperDog 25 – Saturday Sports Wrap

In the boys high school basketball tournament last night…

In Division Four District 98, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City earned their third consecutive title with a 45-29 victory over Hancock. Davin Hill and Connor LeClaire each had 13 points for the Blue Bolts. Joe Watson paced the Bulldogs with 10 points.

In Division Four District 97 at Ewen-Trout Creek, Bessemer edged the host Panthers 51-50.

The Blue Bolts will face Munising at 6:00 Tuesday in the first regional semifinal at Negaunee. Bessemer will play Forest Park in the other semifinal.

In Division Three, Calumet’s season ended with a 71-41 loss to Iron Mountain in the district final. Matt Ojala led the Copper Kings with 25 points.

The high school hockey regional final will be held today at 1:00 between Houghton and Calumet. Our coverage from the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena will begin at 12:35 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added a new recruit. Brendan Christian played for Caledonia High School, in the Grand Rapids area.

MTU/NMU

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost 4-2 to Northern Michigan University last night. NMU opened up an early 2-0 lead. The Huskies tied the game with goals by Keegan Ford and Alec Broetzman. Northern’s Vincent de Mey scored the game-winner in the third period, and the Wildcats sealed the win with a late empty-netter. Matt Jurusik stopped 23 shots for Tech. Atte Tolvinen set a new NMU record with 58 saves. Those teams wrap up their regular seasons tonight in Marquette.

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Arizona Coyotes tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost to the New York Mets 7-1 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. The Tigers will face the Atlanta Braves this afternoon. Listen for Tigers baseball again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Seattle Mariners 7-3 in Cactus League action. The Brewers will play the Seattle Mariners today.

CopperDog 150

Rita Wehseler holds the lead after the first stage of the 10th annual CopperDog 150. Wehseler built a nearly seven-minute advantage over Ryan Anderson, and a 15-minute lead over Frank Moe. Local mushers Becky Bean and Tom Bauer are 14th and 15th. The second stage of the 150 will begin this morning at 9:00 in Eagle Harbor, and will end early this afternoon in Copper Harbor.

Calumet musher Jerry Trudell leads the field in the CopperDog 80. Trudell finished the first stage six-and-a-half minutes better than Alex LaPlante, and is 18 minutes up on Lynne Witte. Colie Fleming of the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech was unable to finish the first leg. The CopperDog 80 will conclude tomorrow with a stage from Copper Harbor to Calumet.

Geri Minard won the first CopperDog 25 race from Calumet to Gay last night. Local musher Susan Serafini placed second, more than 12 minutes off the pace. Other local finishers included Hannah Tiura in ninth place, and Kady Gerhke and Ty Longstreet from the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech in 10th and 11th.
