Morning Sports for Friday, May 2nd:

MLB: Tigers Open at KC Tonight
The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a series at Kansas City tonight. Rick Porcello will face James Shields. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Brewers ‘Pen Falters Against Reds
The Reds scored five runs in the eighth inning, and beat the Brewers 8-3. The meltdown wasted a quality start by Marco Estrada… who gave up three runs over six innings. All five of those eighth-inning runs were charged to Jim Henderson… who gave up a two-run homer to former Tiger Brayan Pena, before leaving the game with the bases loaded. Rob Wooten then walked in a run… and gave up a two-run single. The Brewers continue their series at Cincinnati tonight. Wily Peralta will start against Mike Leake.

Wooten had been brought up from Nashville earlier in the day, to provide a fresh arm for a bullpen that had been badly overworked. Utility player utility man Elian Herrera was sent down to make room. Meanwhile, Ryan Braun said his sore oblique muscle is feeling a bit better… and he might try to play this weekend.

Finlandia Baseball Heads to Northland
The Finlandia baseball team finishes its season with a doubleheader at Northland College on Sunday.

Two high school softball players have announced that they’ll play for Finlandia University next year. Christina Krider is a catcher and third baseman from Hiddenite, North Carolina. Her Alexander Central High School team is rated number-one in the current USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Poll. Nicole Dall is a pitcher and first baseman from Canyon Country, California.

MTU Track Teams Compete at GLIAC Championship
The Michigan Tech track and field teams compete at the GLIAC championship tournament in Ohio this weekend.
