Tigers Edge Dodgers in 10th

The Dodgers scored three times off Joe Nathan in the ninth inning to tie the game… but Victor Martinez’ homer in the top of the 10th lifted the Tigers to a 7-6 victory. Ironically, the blown save by Nathan made him the winning pitcher. Nick Castellanos hit his first career home run. The Tigers take today off, and open an interleague series at San Diego tomorrow night. Rick Porcello will pitch against Andrew Cashner. We’ll join the game after Red Wings hockey on AM 1400, WCCY.

Nathan answered questions yesterday about a comment he had made during a radio interview that he was experiencing a “dead arm.” Nathan said it’s something that many pitchers go through during spring training… and he’s not sure why it’s lasted into the regular season. He also said his arm feels fine… and he’s not worried about the struggles he’s experienced in his first few games as a Tiger. Manager Brad Ausmus said he’s also not concerned.

Torii Hunter said his bruised knee felt better yesterday. Hunter hurt the knee when he crashed into the outfield wall Tuesday night. He did not play last night… but hopes to be ready for tomorrow night’s game.

The Brewers scored five runs in the final two innings, and beat the Phillies 9-4. Ryan Braun’s two-run triple in the eighth was the big hit. Matt Garza gave up four runs over six innings. Tyler Thornburg earned the win in relief. The Brewers wrap up that set in Philadelphia tonight. Marco Estrada will pitch against Cliff Lee.

Red Wings Reach Playoffs with Shootout Loss to Penguins

Riley Sheahan’s goal with a little more than a minute remaining in regulation tied the game… and sent the Red Wings to the playoffs for the 23rd straight season. Detroit wound up losing to the Penguins 4-3 in a shootout… but the single standings point was enough to clinch the wild card berth. The Wings have two games remaining in the regular season… and host the Hurricanes tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Pistons Routed by Cavaliers

The Pistons scored just 37 points in the first half… and lost to the Cavaliers 122-100. Cleveland led by 32 points at halftime, in a game they had to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Even though they did win, the Cavaliers were eliminated when the Hawks beat the Celtics. Detroit has three games left… including tomorrow night’s game at Chicago.

Lions, Packers Announce Pre-Season Opponents

The Lions and Packers have announced their exhibition opponents for the upcoming season.

Green Bay will open with away games at Tennessee and Saint Louis. They’ll conclude with home games against Oakland on August 22nd… and Kansas City on August 28th. The August 22nd game will be televised nationally… which has raised some eyebrows, because that’s the opening night of the Wisconsin high school football season.

Detroit will open at home against the Browns in the first week… then travel to Oakland. They’ll return home to face the Jaguars… and close the pre-season at Buffalo. Specific dates have not yet been announced.
