MLB: Tigers Stymied by Indians
The Indians scored three runs in the first two innings off Anibal Sanchez… and defeated the Tigers 3-2. Sanchez bounced back to strike out eight over five innings… but Detroit couldn’t come back. Full game details are here. That series wraps up this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start against Danny Salazar. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400, WCCY. The Tigers host the Angels in a three-game series that begins tomorrow.

The Brewers broke their two-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Cardinals. Wily Peralta pitched into the seventh, and earned his second win of the season. He also started a three-run rally with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Full game details are here. The Brewers open a four-game series at Pittsburgh tonight. Yovani Gallardo will start against Edinson Volquez.

Finlandia Softball Weathered Out
The Finlandia softball team games scheduled at Lakeland College yesterday were canceled because of poor field conditions. The Lions’ doubleheaders at Concordia-Wisconsin this afternoon… and at Wisconsin-Oshkosh tomorrow… have also been called off.

The Finlandia University baseball team has a doubleheader scheduled this afternoon at Carroll University.

Finlandia All-Academic Team Honored
21 Finlandia student-athletes were honored yesterday for earning a place on the University’s All-Academic team. To qualify, students must have completed at least 30 college-level credits and achieved a minimum overall GPA of 3.50. Local honorees include volleyball player Amanda Gustafson from Hancock… hockey player Kimberly Harter from Hancock… baseball player C.J. Lepisto from Hancock… golfer Dylan Peterson from Hancock… and basketball player Matt Strong from Houghton. See the full list here.

Red Wings Prep for Playoffs
The Red Wings open the N-H-L playoffs tomorrow night at Boston. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Pistons End Season with Loss
The Pistons closed their season with a narrow 112-111 loss to the Thunder. As was the case so many times this year, Detroit led much of the game… only to be outscored by nine points in the fourth quarter. Rookie Kentavious Caldwell-Pope started in place of Rodney Stuckey, and scored a career-best 30 points. The Pistons finish with a record of 29 wins and 53 losses… in fourth place in the Eastern Conference Central Division.

The last place team in the Central Division has been sold. Milwaukee Bucks’ owner Herb Kohl is turning the club over to New York investment bankers Marc Lasry and Wesley Edens for 550-million dollars. Other team owners must approve the deal. Lasry and Edens are promising to keep the team in Milwaukee. They and Kohl will contribute 200-million dollars to help build a new arena.

MTU: Jurmu to Join Huskies
Houghton High School basketball star Elisa Jurmu will play college hoops at Michigan Tech next winter. Jurmu scored more than 1,000 points in her career as a Gremlin, and led Houghton to the Class C state tournament semifinals as a junior. She was named to the Class B All-State team and the U-P Dream Team this past season, and was the WestPAC Girls’ Player of the Year. Jurmu becomes the fifth high school senior to sign a Letter of Intent to play at Tech next season.
