In the N-H-L… the Red Wings host the Canadiens tonight.

The Gibson Cup series opens tonight. The Portage Lake Pioneers host the Calumet Wolverines at Dee Stadium. Hear the entire series on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In the N-B-A… the Cavaliers came from 16 points down in the fourth quarter to beat the Pistons 97-96. Dion Walters’ jump shot from the baseline as time expired completed the comeback. It’s the 11th time this season that Detroit has lead at the end of the third quarter… and lost. The Pistons have dropped 17 of their last 20 games… and entertain the Heat tomorrow night.

There’s a report that the Pistons will be beefing up their minor-league system. Currently, Detroit assigns Development League players to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants… which also uses players from several other N-B-A teams. The report says a group of investors plans to purchase the Springfield Armor D-League team… move it from Massachusetts to Grand Rapids… and affiliate it exclusively with the Pistons. None of that has been officially confirmed.

Our coverage of the NCAA basketball tournament resumes this evening on AM 1400, WCCY.

In baseball spring training action yesterday, Justin Verlander pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning, and the Tigers edged the Phillies 1-0. Verlander gave up just one hit. In his 20 innings of spring training work, he didn’t give up a single run. His next start will be Monday… opening day at Comerica Park. The forecast is for partly sunny skies, with a high of 54. The Tigers will face the Braves this afternoon. Max Scherzer will make his final spring start. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400, WCCY.

Yovani Gallardo didn’t make it out of the third inning… giving up four runs as the Brewers lost to the Indians 10-3. The Brewers will play the Reds this afternoon.

In N-F-L news… the Lions are looking for a new backup quarterback. Former backup Shaun Hill has signed a one-year deal with the Rams. Possibilities include former Detroit backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky. Team officials have not ruled out selecting a potential backup in the upcoming draft. They have ruled out Mark Sanchez… who was released by the Jets last week.
