Morning Sports for Wednesday, May 14th:

MLB: Tigers
Miguel Cabrera’s three-run, two-out homer in the ninth inning lifted the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the Orioles Tuesday night. The blast was possible only because a video replay showed that Rajai Davis had safely stolen second base… after having initially been called out. Baltimore closer Tommy Hunter then retired Don Kelly and Ian Kinsler… but Torii Hunter drew a walk… setting up Cabrera’s game-winning shot. Victor Martinez then put an exclamation point on the comeback with a home run that left Camden Yard completely. Drew Smyly gave up a run in the first… then settled in to complete six innings. Justin Miller pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win, and Joe Nathan collected his ninth save.

The Tigers wrap up that series at Baltimore this afternoon. Justin Verlander will face Kevin Gausman. Hear the first pitch at 12:35 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Brewers
Marco Estrada wasn’t sharp… but held the Pirates to just one run over six innings, as the Brewers defeated Pittsburgh 5-2. Milwaukee started the game without Aramis Ramirez… who was placed on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. Carlos Gomez left the game with a sore back. Ryan Braun returned from the D-L… but played only six innings, as he works his way back from a rib cage muscle strain.

The Brewers host the Pirates again tonight. Wily Peralta will pitch against Francisco Liriano.

Milwaukee has also brought utility player Elian Herrera up from Nashville.

Finlandia Men’s Hoops Adds Eskymo
Brandon Robinette of the Escanaba Eskymos will join the Finlandia men’s basketball team next fall. Robinette is a 6’5” forward. He averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game last season… was named Most Valuable Player of the Great Northern Conference… and was named to the All-U.P. Dream Team.

Pistons Hire Van Gundy
Stan Van Gundy will become the new head coach and chief of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons. The official announcement will be made sometime in the next few days, but sources inside the Pistons’ organization have confirmed the story. Van Gundy has coached the Heat and the Magic. The new position will give him control of personnel decisions. A general manager will also be hired… who will report to Van Gundy.
