The Detroit Tigers pushed their winning streak to six games Sunday with a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Mike Pelfrey turned in his best start in a Detroit uniform, giving up just one run while pitching into the seventh inning. He left trailing 1-0. Detroit took the lead with three runs in the eighth – the first when Ian Kinsler scored from second on a Victor Martinez groundout, and two more on a clutch double by Justin Upton. They added two insurance runs in the ninth on Ian Kinsler’s 200th career home run. Bruce Rondon relieved Pelfrey with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, and retired both of the batters he faced to get the win. Shane Greene and Kyle Ryan each added a scoreless inning.

After sweeping the Rays, the Tigers open a critical series against the Central Division-leading Indians in Cleveland tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Danny Salazar. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ late comeback fell short, as they fell to the Saint Louis Cardinals 9-8 Sunday. The Crew trailed 9-4 heading into the final frame. They loaded the bases with nobody out. Aaron Hill drew a walk to force in a run. Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ double drove in two more. and Aaron Hill scored on an Hernan Perez groundout. Milwaukee had a chance to tie the game with two runners on, and two out, but pinch-hitter Martin Maldonado struck out. Starter Chase Anderson struggled, and took the loss in a game that was delayed three times for 149 minutes because of rain.

The Brewers open a series in Washington against the Nationals this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Max Scherzer.

Former Michigan Tech hockey goaltender Jamie Phillips has signed a two-year contract with the Winnipeg Jets. Phillips was drafted by the Jets in the seventh round of the 2012 draft. In his four seasons as a Husky, he compiled a 1.97 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. The entry-level contract is reported to be worth $675,000. Read the Jets’ press release here.
