MTU Football Picked for Fifth in GLIAC – Tuesday Sports Wrap

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team has been picked to finish fifth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this fall. The annual coaches’ poll tabs Ferris State as the preseason favorite, followed by Grand Valley, Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State. Davenport is picked to finish sixth, with Northern Michigan seventh, and Northwood eighth in its final season of GLIAC competition.

The Finlandia University football team has added a new member. Jacari Stevenson is a running back from Rochester Hills, Michigan.

Twilight League

In Copper Country Twilight baseball league play tonight…
• Houghton Building Supply-Stanton faces Garnet Garage at the Houghton Field.
• Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker takes on Northern Driveline at the Stanton Field.

The Twilight League tournament will be held this weekend. Hear the semifinals and the championship game Sunday on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a series in Baltimore tonight. Casey Mize will start against Keegan Akin. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs were rained out last night. Those teams will play a day-night doubleheader in Chicago today. Freddy Peralta will face Justin Steele in the afternoon contest. Aaron Ashby will pitch against Alec Mills in the nightcap.

Milwaukee continues to get its COVID-sidelined players back. Hunter Strickland was cleared yesterday, and Blaine Hardy was sent down to Nashville to make room on the roster. Jake Cousins is expected to rejoin the bullpen tonight.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have signed free agent cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman. Robey-Coleman had some success with the Bills and the Rams after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2013. He played for the Eagles last year, but fell short of expectations.

Horseshoes

In the opening round of the Copper Country Horseshoe League tournament last night…
• Top seed Calumet One dispatched eighth seed Loading Zone 9-0.
• Second seed Dreamland One eliminated seventh seed Calumet Electronics 8-1.
• Third seed L and L ousted sixth seed Rocky’s Bar 6-3.
• Fifth seed Harter’s Party Store defeated fourth seed 41 Lumber 6-3.

The semifinals will be played next Monday…
• Calumet One faces Harter’s at Agassiz Park
• L and L plays Dreamland One at Dreamland
