MTU Hockey Blanks Anchorage – Saturday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey last night…
– Scott Loukus had a hat trick and two assists, as Calumet defeated Escanaba 8-2. Dean Loukus had a goal and three assists. Brent Loukus, Tanner Rowe, Sam Erkkila and Alex Mattila also scored for the Copper Kings. Sam Kiiskila made 19 saves in net.
– The modified Wisigan Cup Tournament wraps up today at the SDC. Tomahawk did not make the trip, because of the weather. The result from last night’s game between Merrill and Negaunee was not reported. Today, Jeffers will face Merrill at 1:00 at the SDC.

In high school boys  basketball last night…
– The Ontonagon at Hancock game was postponed to February 13th.
– The Chassell at Bessemer contest was delayed to February 18th.
– L’Anse defeated Gwinn 68-45.
– Baraga lost to Republic-Michigamme 53-39.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 79-57. Ashton Janke scored 27 for the Blue Bolts.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team scored three goals in the final period, and defeated Trine University 3-1 last night. Paul Lochner put the Lions on the board, Hunter Kero’s power play tally was the game-winner, and Kendall Bolen-Porter sealed the win with a late empty-netter. Santeri Sappinen stopped 19 shots to earn the win. The Lions are now one point out of second place in the NCHA North Division, and will host Adrian College today. The Finlandia women’s hockey team hosts Northland College this evening at 7:00, and tomorrow afternoon at 2:30.

The Lions men’s basketball team lost 100-77 at Lawrence Tech last night. Tyler Browner led the Lions with 21 points. Austin Carlson added 17, Dylan Underwood 16, and Jaden Janke 12. FinnU will play at Siena Heights University tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team dropped an 86-43 decision at Albion College last evening. Katie Lundeen scored 18 points for the Lions.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team blanked Alaska-Anchorage 3-0 last night. Brian Halonen scored an early goal and a late goal, with a tally by Jake Jackson sandwiched in the middle. Matt Jurusik made 18 saves to claim the shutout. The Huskies skate at Anchorage again tonight.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team’s late comeback fell short, in a 3-2 loss to seventh-ranked Minnesota State last night. Those teams face off again tonight in Marquette.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams will play at Northern Michigan University today. The women’s game tips off at 11:00, and the men’s contest at 1:00.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Mosinee Papermakers 8-5 last evening. The Calumet Wolverines will host the Papermakers tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost to the Dallas Mavericks 106-101 last night. Blake Griffin scored 35 for Detroit. Andre Drummond cleared concussion protocol, and returned to collect 15 rebounds. The Pistons host the Milwaukee Bucks Tuesday. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings are off until February 1st because of the NHL All-Star break.

NFL
The NFL Pro Bowl kicks off tomorrow afternoon at 3:00. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
