MTU Hockey Claims Shootout – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey, the Wisigan Cup Tournament opened Friday with losses for both the Michigan teams involved. Ashland edged Jeffers 5-4 in overtime. L’Anse fell to the Wisconsin Northwest Icemen 6-3. On Saturday, Ashland scored four goals in the first period, and defeated L’Anse 7-2. The Oredockers outshot the Purple Hornets 57-26. Forest Miller and Kyle Maki scored for L’Anse. Jeffers defeated Northwest 6-3.

Calumet outscored Kingsford 6-2 Saturday. Brent Loukus had two goals and two assists for the Copper Kings, who broke open a close game with three tallies in the third period. Rory Anderson had a goal and two assists. Alex Studebaker stopped 25 shots in net to earn the win.

Lucchini

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team pulled out a 4-4 regulation tie at Alabama-Huntsville Saturday night, then won the bonus WCHA standings point in the shootout. With goalie Angus Redmond on the bench, Jake Lucchini’s goal with 11 seconds left in regulation forced overtime. After the scoreless extra period, Chris Gerrie’s goal in the ninth round of the shootout finally ended it. On Friday, Reid Sturos scored twice, as the Michigan Tech hockey team defeated Alabama-Huntsville 5-2.

Anderson

The MTU women’s basketball team built an early lead, and defeated Ferris State 70-56 Saturday. Morgan Anderson had 18 points and nine assists, as the Huskies won their fourth straight game.

Chartier

The Tech men’s team trailed Ferris State by 12 at halftime, came back to take a late lead, but fell to the Bulldogs 77-76 on Saturday. Jordan Chartier pulled the Huskies within one with a couple of clutch free throws with nine seconds remaining. He then grabbed the rebound off a missed Ferris State free throw, but the Huskies were unable to get a final shot. Chartier scored a career-best 28 points.

NMU
The NMU hockey team was off this weekend.

The Wildcats women’s basketball team lost a 56-53 heartbreaker to Grand Valley State Saturday. The men’s team fell to the Lakers 79-56.

Rounds

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team fell 3-1 to Northland College Saturday night. Andrew Martin scored the Lions’ only goal, and Alec Rounds made 32 saves. Finlandia lost 6-0 at Northland Friday night.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 3-0 at Concordia-Wisconsin Saturday. Breanna Merriam made 63 saves, as the Lions were outshot 66-12. On Friday, Finlandia lost 6-1 at Concordia-Wisconsin.

Cercone

The Finlandia men’s basketball team led by eight points twice in the second half, but lost to St. Scholastica 94-87 Saturday. Nick Cercone led the Lions with 18 points. The Lions fell to Wisconsin-Superior 81-76 Friday night.

Hakala

The women’s team fell 86-79 to the Saints on Saturday. Mikayla Hakala scored a career-best 24 points to lead the Lions. Finlandia lost to Wisconsin-Superior 87-81 on Friday.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Mosinee Papermakers 5-4 in a shootout Saturday night. The Pioneers fell 4-1 to the Papermakers on Friday.

The Calumet Wolverines grabbed a 4-1 advantage in the first period, but the Marquette Mutineers scored four times in the second period, and held on to defeat the Wolverines 6-5 on Saturday.  The Wolverines fell to the Mutineers 6-4 Friday night.

Jackson

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost 116-103 to the Heat at Miami Saturday night. Reggie Jackson scored 24 for Detroit, and Andre Drummond snared 19 rebounds. The Pistons play at Boston Monday night. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NHL
The NHL All-Star Game will be played today. The Detroit Red Wings return to action Tuesday at home against the New Jersey Devils. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The NFL Pro Bowl will be played tonight. Hear the broadcast beginning at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
