MTU Hockey Drops 4th Straight – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In the high school volleyball tournament last night…
– In Class C, St. Ignace got past Indian River Inland Lakes 3-2. The Saints will face Calumet in the regional semifinal Tuesday evening at 6:30 at Gladstone.
– In Class D, Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Munising in the regional semifinal Tuesday at Westwood.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team opened its season with a 5-0 loss to 15th-ranked Milwaukee School of Engineering last night. Matt Arnold stopped 28 shots, and took the loss in net. The Lions will entertain 22nd-ranked Concordia-Wisconsin this afternoon at 4:00. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift, and 993TheLift.com. The first 50 fans to attend the game will receive a special gift from Coca Cola of Hancock and 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions women’s hockey team defeated Trine University 2-0 last night. Hannah Tormanen and Kaytlin Richardson scored for Finlandia. Goaltender Annah Smiddy stopped 51 shots as the Lions earned their first shutout since 2009, and only the sixth in school history. Those teams play again in Indiana today.

The Finlandia volleyball team opens the American Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament against Alfred State University today at 2:00. The Lions are the top seed in the tournament. Alfred State is hosting the event, in Alfred, New York.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team begins play in the ACAA tournament today at 3:00 against SUNY-Canton. The Lions are seeded third. The tournament is being held in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, at the University of Valley Forge.

The Finlandia University football team plays at Trinity Bible College this afternoon.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team lost its fourth straight game last night, falling 2-1 to Bowling Green. Thomas Beretta gave the Huskies a brief early lead with a power play goal six minute into the game, but the Falcons tied the score later in the first period, and scored the game-winner in the closing seconds of the second period. Devin Kero stopped 26 of 28 shots in net, and took the loss. Those teams meet again tonight. Faceoff is at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The MTU football team plays at Tiffin this afternoon.

The Huskies volleyball team plays at Northern Michigan University today.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost 3-0 to ninth-ranked Minnesota State last night. Those teams play in Marquette again tonight.

The Wildcats football team plays at Wayne State today.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will play at Edmonton tomorrow afternoon.

NBA
Andre Drummond scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 105-96 last night. Drummond sank 14 of 16 free throws after overcoming early foul trouble. The Pistons host the Sacramento Kings tonight.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers continued to clear space on their 40-man roster with four more cuts yesterday. Pitchers Myles Jaye and Kyle Ryan, catcher Bryan Holaday and first baseman Efren Navarro cleared waivers. They were assigned to Triple-A Toledo, but all four could opt for free agency. The Tigers activated designated Victor Martinez from the 60-day disabled list. They now have 31 players on the 40-man roster.
