MTU Hockey Earns Split with FSU – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey yesterday…
– Houghton fell to Rochester United 4-3 in overtime.
– Hancock skated past Birmingham Brother Rice 6-4.
– Jeffers lost to Big Rapids 3-2 at the DIII Challenge in Gaylord.

Finlandia
Wisconsin-Superior used a late surge to defeat the Finlandia University men’s hockey team 3-1 yesterday. Paul Lochner gave the Lions an early lead midway through the first period. That held up until the Yellowjackets scored three times in the third period to claim the win. Marcus Gloss stopped 41 shots for FinnU.

The Lions women’s hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to Concordia-Moorhead yesterday. Annah Smiddy stopped 40 shots for Finlandia. The Lions’ only score came off the stick of Sierra Meiners in the closing minute.

The FinnU women’s basketball team plays at Adrian College today.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team salvaged a split against Ferris State with a 5-1 victory last night. The Bulldogs took a brief lead in the first period, but the goal was the only one that Robbie Beydoun would allow, as he earned his first collegiate win in net. Alex Gillies tied the contest before the first period ended, and Jake Lucchini, Alex Smith, Dylan Steman and Jake Jackson also scored for the Huskies.

The MTU women’s basketball team routed Purdue Northwest 86-40 yesterday. Lindsay Winter led a balanced attack with 14 points, and Elisa Jurmu added a career-best 13.

The Tech men’s basketball team used a strong second half to claim a 75-66 come-from-behind victory over Purdue-Northwest. Kyle Monroe led the effort with 29 points and eight rebounds.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie with Bemidji State last night. As they did after Friday’s tie, the Wildcats won the extra WCHA standings point in a shootout.

The NMU women’s basketball team suffered a 66-59 double-overtime loss at Grand Valley State yesterday. The Wildcats men’s team claimed a 71-68 single-overtime victory over the Lakers.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines blanked the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 8-0 last night. Ian Carroll earned the shutout in net, in his second GLHL game.

The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 6-3 on Friday. The result of the Pioneers’ game against the Monroe Blues last night was not reported.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Boston Celtics this afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings fell 6-1 to the St. Louis Blues yesterday afternoon. Frans Nielsen scored Detroit’s only goal, in the third period. Jimmy Howard gave up four goals over the first two periods. Petr Mrazek replaced him for the third period, and allowed the final two scores. The Wings host the Florida Panthers tomorrow night. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.

NFL
This afternoon, the Detroit Lions visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers visit the Cleveland Browns for a 1:00 game.
