MTU Hockey Falls, Hoops Teams Split – Sunday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey yesterday…
– Calumet fell to Birmingham Brother Rice 5-3. The Warriors scored the first two goals of the game, then added three more in the second period to put the game away. Sam Erkkila scored early for the Copper Kings. Tanner Rowe and Nick Djerf added late tallies.
– Jeffers lost to Hayward 7-3 at the Hayward Invitational. The Hurricanes scored the first two goals of the game, then added four more in the second period. David Storm scored an early goal for the Jets, and Jonathan Mantila and Kellen Kline added third-period goals.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie at Marian University yesterday. Cale Markham and Teddy Randell scored for the Lions. Marcus Gloss made 42 saves.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team cruised to a 7-2 exhibition win over the Sault College Cougars last evening. Natasha Kern had her second hat trick in two nights. Taylor Pingrey scored twice.

The Lions women’s basketball team won its fourth straight game yesterday, outscoring Adrian College 85-78. Katie Lundeen scored 34 points – the fourth best individual game effort in team history. She also grabbed 10 rebounds. Mariah Austin had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech hockey team settled for a split in its weekend series against Bowling Green State University, falling to the 10th-ranked Falcons 3-2 last evening. Bowling Green took an early two-goal lead. Tech responded with third-period scores by Tyler Rockwell and Thomas Beretta to tie the contest, but Alex Barber’s power play tally with nine minutes remaining proved to be the game-winner. Robbie Beydoun made 27 saves in net, and took the loss.

The Northern Michigan University hockey squad pushed its winning streak to six games with a 4-1 victory at Alaska-Anchorage last night.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team shut down Lake Superior State University 67-40 yesterday. Five Huskies scored in double figures.

The Tech men’s team fell behind early, made up some ground in the second half, but lost to the Lakers 75-67. Dawson Bilski led the Huskies with 24 points.

The Northern Michigan University women’s hoops team defeated Ferris State University 53-42 yesterday. The men’s late comeback fell short, as they fall to the Bulldogs 62-59.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers scored two late goals, and came from behind to edge the Eagle River Falcons 5-4 last night.

The Calumet Wolverines were off this weekend.

NBA
Blake Griffin torched his former team for 44 points, as the Detroit Pistons defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 109-104 yesterday. Andre Drummond added 20 points, and grabbed 21 rebounds. The Pistons visit the Utah Jazz tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 8:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings claimed a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild last night. Tyler Bertuzzi scored his first NHL hat trick. Thomas Vanek scored twice. Jimmy Howard made 16 saves to get the win in net. The Wings host the Anaheim Ducks Tuesday. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In the NFL Divisional playoff games…
– Yesterday, the Kansas City Chiefs eliminated the Indianapolis Colts 31-13, and the Los Angeles Rams ousted the Dallas Cowboys 30-22.
