MTU Hockey Picked for Mid-Pack Finish – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball tonight…
– Houghton travels to Negaunee.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell journeys to Wakefield-Marenisco
– Baraga plays at L’Anse.
– Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Watersmeet.

In cross country, local teams run at the Dollar Bay/Chassell Invitational at the Chassell Trails.

There has been an addition to today’s football schedule. The Hancock varsity will play at Gwinn tomorrow night. That would normally mean that the schools’ JV squads would meet this evening at Hancock. However, Gwinn has no JV team this year, so a freshman game between Hancock and Houghton has been scheduled to begin at 6:30 at McAfee Field.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University volleyball team lost both of its matches yesterday, falling 3-1 (6-25, 17-25, 25-21, 11-25) to North Central University and 3-0 (16-25, 14-25, 14-25) to Northland College.

The Lions women’s soccer team and Wisconsin-Superior played to a 0-0 draw.

The men’s soccer team lost 3-0 at Coe College.

WCHA

The Michigan Tech men’s hockey team has been picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association this season. The Huskies were voted fourth in the league’s media preseason poll yesterday, and fifth in the Mankato Free Press coaches poll. Northern Michigan University was picked to finish third by the media, and fourth by the coaches. Lake Superior State was picked to place sixth in both polls. Both polls selected Minnesota State to win the conference.

MLB

Yasiel Puig singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Cleveland Indians shaded the Detroit Tigers 2-1 last night. Spencer Turnbull tossed five good innings for Detroit, giving up just one run. Jose Cisnero took the loss.

The Tigers visit the Indians again tonight. Daniel Norris will pitch against Mike Clevinger. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage begins at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the San Diego Padres 2-1 last night. Adrian Houser gave up both runs over five innings, and suffered the loss. Keston Hiura homered.

The Brewers entertain the Padres again this afternoon. Jordan Lyles will start against Joey Lucchesi.

The Cardinals won, and the Cubs lost. Milwaukee and Chicago now trail Saint Louis by three games in the National League Central Division, and remain tied for the last wild card playoff berth.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 in exhibition play last night. Taro Hirose scored Detroit’s only goal. The Wings continue their preseason schedule tomorrow night at home against the New York Islanders. Hear Red Wings games again this season on 99.3 The Lift.
