MLB
Nomar Mazara’s home run in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Texas Rangers a 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers yesterday afternoon. Mazara’s blast off Warwick Saupold was his second of the day. Using a makeshift lineup forced by injuries and illness, the Tigers collected 10 hits, but left 10 men on base. Starter Francisco Liriano lasted just four innings while battling the flu. Nicholas Castellanos missed the game with a swollen knee. Pete Kozma hit his first home run of the season.

The Tigers have today off, and begin a home series against the Seattle Mariners tomorrow night. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Marco Gonzales. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

With Jordan Zimmermann on the disabled list, Blaine Hardy will come out of the bullpen to start Sunday’s game against the Mariners.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 6-2 to the Cleveland Indians yesterday afternoon. The Crew picked up only five hits off Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco, who went the distance, and struck out 14 batters. Milwaukee starter Junior Guerra struck out nine over five innings, but gave up four runs in the fourth, and took the loss.

The Brewers play at Colorado tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against German Márquez.

Milwaukee starter Wade Miley is back on the disabled list. He could miss four to six weeks with a strained oblique. Infielder Nick Franklin has joined him on the D-L with a strained quad. On the bright side, closer Corey Knebel is back with the team after missing most of the season with a hamstring injury. He’ll fill one of the open roster spots. Utility man Tyler Saladino has been called up from Colorado Springs to fill the other.

NHL
The second round of the NHL playoffs will end tonight, when Winnipeg skates at Nashville. The series is tied 3-3. The winner will face Las Vegas in the Western Conference finals beginning Saturday. Washington and Tampa Bay open the Eastern Conference finals tomorrow.

NBA
The second round of the NBA playoffs concluded last night, as Boston edged Philadelphia 114-112. The Celtics won that set 4-1, and will take on the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals. Houston and Golden State will begin the Western Conference finals on Monday.

NFL
New Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia says he was falsely accused of sexual assault while in college 22 years ago. Patricia was indicted by a grand jury on one charge following an alleged incident that occurred during a spring break trip to South Padre Island. A woman told authorities that Patricia and a teammate broke into her hotel room and attacked her. The charge was dropped when the woman refused to cooperate for a trial. The situation came to light in a story published by the Detroit News. Lions owner Martha Firestone Ford says it did not turn up in the team’s pre-employment background check.  Ford says team officials have discussed the matter with Patricia and the lawyer who represented him at that time. She says they believe his account, and will stand behind him as coach.

MTU
Next season’s Michigan Tech hockey schedule has been released. The Huskies will open at home October 13th and 14th against Minnesota-Duluth. They will play at Wisconsin two weeks later. Matches against Northern Michigan University will take place December 7th and 8th, and March 1st and 2nd. The Great Lakes Invitational is scheduled for December 28th and 29th. See the full schedule here.

Two MTU student athletes have received Pat Riepma scholarships from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for post-graduate study. One went to former L’Anse High School football standout Cody Goldsworthy, who was the Huskies’ Defensive Lineman of the Year. The other went to volleyball player Stephanie Dietrich. Both were GLIAC All-Academic Team honorees.
