MTU Hoops Teams Win; Hockey Takes MacInnes Cup – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey, Houghton, Hancock and Calumet all won their Saturday games downstate at the Trenton Showcase.
Hancock Hockey Logo– Hancock came from behind to edge Plymouth 3-2.  Luke Rautio’s goal midway through the third period was the game-winner. Alex Nordstrom had tied the game in the opening minute of the third period. Devyn Lacourt scored the first Bulldogs’ goal. Cam Murray stopped 21 shots to earn the win in goal. Hancock opened play Friday morning with a 4-3 shootout loss to Saginaw Heritage.
Houghton-Gremlins-Logo– Houghton wiped out Midland Dow 6-0. Reid Pietila had a hat trick and an assist. Dawson McKay, Alan Jurmu and Jordan Mewborn also scored for the Gremlins. Dmitri Kochan had to make only 12 saves to get the shutout in goal. On Friday, the Gremlins came from behind to earn a 4-3 shootout win over U of D Jesuit.
Calumet Copper Kings Logo– Calumet edged Grosse Pointe South 4-3 in a shootout. The Copper Kings fell behind 2-0 early, but consecutive goals by Ryan Nelson, Robbie Erkkila and Dylan Boberg gave them the lead in the third period. Grosse Pointe’s Marshall Vylatel scored with seven minutes remaining to force the shootout (there is no overtime period at the Showcase). Erkkila and Rory Anderson scored in the shootout to give the Kings the victory. Nick Voelker stopped 18 of 221 shots in goal. On Friday, the Copper Kings lost 5-4 to  St. Mary’s Prep.

– Jeffers edged Kingsford 2-1 on Friday.
– The results of L’Anse’s games against Shawano Friday night and Saturday were not reported.

In boys high school basketball Friday night…
– Hancock edged L’Anse 42-40.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell trounced Bessemer 64-35 – the Lakes remain unbeaten. Arthur Lyons scored 36 for the Lakes.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City shaded Baraga 60-57 in double overtime. Brendan Varline scored 24 for the Vikings.
– Jeffers fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 73-48.
– Chassell overpowered Republic-Michigamme 62-30.
– Ontonagon lost at Wakefield-Marenisco 69-61.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team won the MacInnes Cup Saturday night, with a 3-1 victory over Lake Superior State in the  second game of the Winter Carnival series. Jamie Phillips made 22 saves. CJ Eick, Max Vallis and Jake Lucchini scored for the Huskies. Vallis was named the series’ Most Valuable Player, with three goals in the two games. The Huskies opened the  annual Winter Carnival series with a 3-0 win over Lake Superior State Friday night.

Danielle Blake’s layup with two-tenths of a second remaining lifted the Michigan Tech women’s basketball team to a 57-55 victory over Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon. The Huskies had led by six with three minutes to go, but GVSU pulled even with eight seconds remaining. Mackenzie Perttu led MTU with 15 points and nine rebounds. Tech remains tied with Saginaw Valley State for first place in the GLIAC North Division.

The  Michigan Tech men’s team bolstered its playoff hopes with a 90-86 win over Grand Valley. Tech surged ahead early, and led by as many as 23 points in the second half before the Lakers came back. The Huskies won the foul-filled game at the line by making 34 of 37 free throws, including 23 of 24 over the final 10 minutes. Bryan Heath led MTU with 25 points.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Alaska-Anchorage with a 5-4 victory Saturday night. The Wildcats edged the Seawolves 3-2 Friday night.

The  Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team defeated Ferris State 59-49 on Saturday. The Wildcats men’s team lost to the Bulldogs 70-61.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team fell to 14th-ranked Marian University 5-0 on Saturday. The Lions were outshot 34-9.  Finlandia fell to Marian 4-1 Friday night.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team plays a single game at Marian University today.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team overcame a big early deficit, and downed Bethany Lutheran College 82-69 on Saturday.  The Lions trailed by 17 at halftime, but outscored the Vikings 51-21 in the second half. Jordan LaPlant led Finlandia with 22 points, and Brandon Robinette scored 20. On Friday, the Lions pulled out a 72-68 win at Martin Luther College.

Brooke PasanenThe Finlandia women’s basketball team lost to Bethany Lutheran 86-71 on Saturday. Brooke Pasanen scored 25 points for the Lions. On Friday, Finlandia lost to Martin Luther 85-60.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Calumet Wolverines 7-6 Saturday night. On Friday, the Wolverines dropped an 8-7 overtime game to the Eagle River Falcons at the Pond Hockey Tournament.

Red Wings LogoThe Detroit Red Wings broke out of their offensive slump, and defeated the New York Islanders 5-1 Saturday afternoon. Dylan Larkin and Tomas Tatar each had a goal and an assist, as the Wings broke a five-game home losing streak. The Wings will host the Florida Panthers Monday night. Face-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons fell behind early, and lost to the Indiana Pacers 112-104 Saturday night. Reggie Jackson led Detroit with 26 points. The Pistons host the Toronto Raptors Monday night.

NFL
The Denver Broncos face the Carolina Panthers in the Super Bowl tonight. Our coverage begins at 3:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Legendary Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre was named to the NFL Hall of Fame Saturday. Favre becomes the 24th Packer to be enshrined, and the fifth to be elected in his first year of eligibility.
